biography

Beginnings and European Cup successes

Fenninger attended primary school in her home town of Adnet in the state of Salzburg and then the main ski school in Bad Gastein and the ski hotel management school in Bad Hofgastein . In the latter, Marcel Hirscher was a classmate for two years. From 2002 to 2004 she won six Austrian school championship titles and in 2004 she won the giant slalom and super-G of the Whistler Cup and the slalom of the Trofeo Topolino , the two most important international children's ski races. After reaching the age limit, Fenninger competed in her first FIS race in December 2004 . The next month she won two bronze medals at the European Youth Olympic Festival 2005 in Slalom and Super-G. In February 2005 the Austrian youth championship (age group I youth) followed in giant slalom and the first victory in an FIS race in a giant slalom in Lackenhof .

Fenninger was in the squad of the 2005 Austrian Ski added (Austrian Ski Federation) and came from the winter 2005/2006 in the European Cup used. She stood on the podium for the first time after her second European Cup race and celebrated her first victories in the giant slalom in Turnau and La Plagne in January 2006 . With a total of four wins and another five podium places, she secured overall victory, victory in the giant slalom classification and third place in the slalom classification in her first European Cup season. Also at her first Junior World Championship in 2006 in Québec , Canada , she achieved great success with two gold medals in the Super-G and the combination as well as a silver medal in the downhill; In addition, she was again Austrian youth champion in her age group, this time in the Super-G.

Fenninger repeated her overall victory in the European Cup in the 2006/2007 season . She won three Super-Gs and three giant slaloms, with which she won both the overall and the Super-G classification and came second in the giant slalom classification. In the same winter, the then 17-year-old made her first appearances in the World Cup , mainly in slalom and giant slalom. She only qualified in one race for the second round and won her first World Cup points on January 21, 2007 in 16th place in the giant slalom in Cortina d'Ampezzo . On March 2nd of the same year, she had a serious fall in the descent of the World Cup super combination in Tarvisio , which is why she had to end the season prematurely and, among other things, missed the 2007 Junior World Championships.

In the 2007/08 European Cup season , Fenninger won three races, was third in the overall standings, first in the combination standings and second in the Super-G standings. In the World Cup that winter, the all-rounder competed in races in all disciplines except downhill and achieved her first top result on December 22, 2007 with fourth place in the super combined in St. Anton am Arlberg . At the Junior World Championships in 2008 she won two gold and one silver medals, just like two years earlier: She won the giant slalom and the combined and came second in the Super-G.

World Cup successes and world championship titles

Fenninger has been a member of the Austrian national team since the 2008/09 season. She only contested four European Cup races this winter and has since concentrated exclusively on the World Cup. In addition to the super combination, the super-G and the downhill were now Fenninger's strongest disciplines, in which she found connection with the world's best. In her first World Cup descent on December 5, 2008 in Lake Louise, she achieved her second top 10 result in eighth place and on January 26, 2009, she was on the podium for the first time in a World Cup race with second place in the Super-G of Cortina d'Ampezzo. Overall, she was among the top ten in six World Cup races in the 2008/2009 season , placing her in 20th place in the overall World Cup standings. At the 2009 World Championships in Val-d'Isère , Fenninger came 4th in the Super G and 7th in the Super Combined; however, she was eliminated on the descent. At the Junior World Championships 2009 , which was held in Garmisch-Partenkirchen next month , she won the bronze medal in the Super-G.

In winter 2009/10 Fenningers stagnated services. She finished in the top ten in three World Cup races and at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver with two 16th places in Super-G and Super Combined, she was far behind her World Cup results of the previous year. In the 2010/11 World Cup season , Fenninger was able to improve significantly, especially in the downhill. In addition to her first podium place in this discipline, 3rd place in Altenmarkt-Zauchensee on January 8th, 2011, she was among the top ten five more times, making her sixth in the Downhill World Cup. She also improved in the Super-G. With a 3rd place in Cortina d'Ampezzo and another three top 10 results, she was seventh in the discipline world cup. She celebrated her greatest success to date on February 11, 2011 at the World Championships in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, when she won the world championship title in the super combination. In the team competition, she won a silver medal. At the end of the season she was Austrian State Champion 2011 in the Super-G. When she was voted Austria's Sportsman of the Year 2011 , she was named “Newcomer of the Year”.

In the 2011/12 season , Fenninger also caught up with the world's best in giant slalom. After her first two top 10 placings in this discipline at the beginning of winter and two podium places in the Super-G at the beginning of December, she won her first World Cup race on December 28, 2011 with the giant slalom in Lienz . In total, she took six podium places this season (2 × giant slalom, 4 × Super-G) and was fifth with 994 points, making her the best Austrian in the overall World Cup ranking.

With a giant slalom victory and five further podium places in three different disciplines during the 2012/2013 season , Fenninger was one of the most promising medal candidates at the 2013 World Championships in Schladming. After she was eliminated in the Super-G and the Super Combined and only finished eleventh in the downhill, she won the bronze medal in the giant slalom. The first victory in a World Cup Super-G followed on March 3, 2013 in Garmisch-Partenkirchen.

Olympic victory and overall World Cup victory

Fenninger with the women's ski team and supervisors at the official farewell to the 2014 Olympic Games

In the 2013/14 season , after several podium places in the Super-G, she won a giant slalom for the third time on December 28th, again in Lienz. As a result, she already went to the Olympic Games in Sochi with great expectations. While 8th place in the super combined and the failure in the downhill did not go as planned, she celebrated the greatest success of her career to date on February 15, 2014: She became Olympic champion in the super G. Three days later she won another medal with silver in the giant slalom. Inspired by these successes, she scored 280 points in the three subsequent World Cup races (she came second in the downhill from Crans-Montana, she won the two giant slaloms in Åre) and thus overtook Maria Höfl-Riesch , who had been leading until then, in the overall World Cup ranking , but the next day in the slalom of Åre regained the lead.

An exciting duel between the two was expected for the World Cup final in Lenzerheide , but for Höfl-Riesch it came to an abrupt end on the first day of the descent with a serious fall - the injuries suffered made it impossible for them to compete in the following races.

6th place in the downhill was enough for Fenninger to take the lead in the overall World Cup standings, and with a second place in the Super-G on March 13, 2014, she was able to gain a lead of 215 points over the remaining competitor Lara Secure victory in the overall World Cup standings well before the last two races. After her victory in the final giant slalom, she won the big ball with a margin of 191 points over Maria Höfl-Riesch and 270 points over third-placed Lara Gut.

Double world championship title and second overall World Cup victory

Fenninger with the 2015 World Cup trophy

Fenninger started the 2014/15 season as it ended the previous one: with a win. She won the Sölden giant slalom ex aequo with Mikaela Shiffrin . As a result, she celebrated her fifth success in this discipline, which Anja Pärson had recently achieved exactly ten years earlier for the women . Several second places in world cup races followed before Fenninger secured gold medals in the Super-G and in the giant slalom at the Alpine World Ski Championships in Vail / Beaver Creek . In the downhill she won silver.

After the World Cup, Fenninger started a winning streak, as in the previous year, winning the giant slalom in Maribor and the alpine combination of Bansko , the latter being her first victory in this discipline in the World Cup. In Bansko she also won the Super-G. After two podium places in Downhill and Super-G in Garmisch-Partenkirchen , she also won the giant slalom in Åre a week later , overtook her fiercest competitor Tina Maze in the overall standings with her ninth place in the World Cup and took the lead. It was already behind the highest level with 370 points. The World Cup final was an open exchange of blows between Maze and Fenninger: Maze was fourth in the downhill and made up 18 points on Fenninger, who had finished the race in 8th place. In the Super-G, Lindsey Vonn won ahead of Fenninger and Maze. After the slalom, in which Fenninger also started, but remained without points, Maze took the lead again with 18 points in the overall standings. In the last race of the season, the giant slalom in Méribel , the Salzburg woman finally won ahead of her teammate Eva-Maria Brem and Tina Maze. For the second time in a row, Fenninger won the Giant Slalom World Cup in front of Brem and the overall World Cup with a 22-point lead over Maze from Slovenia.

Dispute with the ÖSV, season cancellation and new management

At the beginning of January 2015, rumors first became public that Fenninger was interested in a change of nation. Both the ÖSV and Fenninger denied this immediately. Fenninger said she was “Austrian with heart and soul” and even pledged her loyalty to the ÖSV. The reason for speculation of this kind was that their management was negotiating with sponsors who were competing companies for ÖSV partners, including the German automobile manufacturer Mercedes-Benz .

In mid-May 2015, a private e-mail that Fenninger had written and addressed to the ÖSV was made public, threatening the association with her resignation. The background to this was the fact that ÖSV Fenninger had already repeatedly urged him to part with their manager, the German Klaus Kärcher, and to leave their management to ÖSV President Peter Schröcksnadel instead . In addition to the end of these quarrels, Fenninger asked for clear information about the financing of her fitness trainer and better athletic treatment, similar to that of her successful colleague Marcel Hirscher . After several attempts to smooth things over, the conflicting parties announced an agreement in June. A little later Fenninger parted ways with her manager Klaus Kärcher.

On October 21, 2015, three days before the start of the season, Fenninger had a serious fall while training in Sölden. She tore a cruciate ligament and an inner ligament , as well as a tear in the patellar tendon in her right knee. So she was canceled for the entire 2015/16 season .

Since January 2016 Fenninger has been managed by former tennis professional Florian Krumrey. In March 2016 she was nominated for a Laureus Award as World Sportswoman of the Year .

On April 16, 2016, she married her long-time partner, the former snowboarder Manuel Veith , whose last name she adopted. At the end of October 2016 Anna Veith announced the publication of her first book "Zwischenzeit", which deals with her career so far and especially the experiences of her injury time.

Aborted comeback

On December 27, 2016, Veith made her comeback in the Alpine Ski World Cup at the giant slalom on Semmering (a replacement race for Courchevel ), but with 49th place she did not make it into the second run. In the second giant slalom, the original race in the same place, she finished 25th the next day. In the Super-G in Cortina d'Ampezzo on January 29, 2017, she achieved her first podium finish after the injury with a third place. At the 2017 World Championships in St. Moritz , Veith retired in the Super-G and finished 22nd in the giant slalom; She did not start on the descent. In the week after the World Cup, on February 24, 2017, she announced the early end of the season. The reason she cited was a chronic inflammation of the patellar tendon in the left knee, which required an operation.

Successful comeback

In the 2017/18 season, she returned to the World Cup after her second operation. Already on the first race weekend in Lake Louise, she got World Cup points. In the following races in St. Moritz she reached fifth place in the Super-G. On December 17, 2017, 1001 days after her last victory in the World Cup (giant slalom at the World Cup final in Meribel 2015), she won again for the first time. A few days later Veith made her comeback in the giant slalom in Courchevel, in which she did not reach the second round. On December 29, 2017, in Lienz, where she celebrated her first World Cup victory in 2011, she scored points in the giant slalom for the first time in 21st place.

For the opening ceremony of the Olympic Winter Games in Pyeongchang , Korea , Veith was chosen as the flag bearer of the Austrian delegation . There she won the silver medal eight days later in the Super-G, one hundredth of a second behind the Czech Olympic champion Ester Ledecká . Before Ledecká's start, Veith thought she was the winner and gave an interview in which she spoke of the biggest victory of her career. Veith did not expect a victory for Ledecká, whose main discipline is snowboarding and who was surprised at her victory.

Another injury and resignation

After four top 10 results at the beginning of the 2018/19 season , Veith suffered another cruciate ligament rupture on January 12, 2019 during training in Pozza di Fassa (Trentino), where she did not even fall. She had to cancel the season and thereby missed the World Championships in Åre. In the 2019/20 season , she contested a total of eleven races, with a seventh place in Rosa Chutor being her best result. In a special broadcast by ORF on May 23, 2020, she declared her active time in ski racing to be over.

Commitment to cheetah rescue

Anna Veith supports the non-profit organization Cheetah Conservation Fund (CCF), which takes care of the conservation of the cheetah's habitat in Africa and tries to draw attention to the situation of the animal species that is directly threatened with extinction through extensive training programs. Her helmet has a drawing of a cheetah fur (apart from the logo of the head sponsor) and, as the ambassador for this organization, she has published several videos and photos of herself in the look of a cheetah to draw attention to the fact that these animals are critically endangered.

Since 2013 Anna Veith has also been involved in the Austrian species protection association Build an Ark in order to make the protection of cheetahs a sustainable and long-term project. The cooperation of a top athlete with a species protection association under the motto "Top sport meets species protection" offers the opportunity to sensitize a broad public to the topic of the threat to cheetahs.
