Archaeological finds suggest that the area of today's Asahi has been settled since the Jōmon period . In the Edo period , the area initially belonged to the Matsumoto- han , but later passed to the Takatō-han. In the Meiji period , the village in its current territorial dimensions was initially called Yamamoto from October 25, 1875 to February 16, 1884, but was then again divided into its four individual settlements. With the establishment of the modern municipal system, however, it was rebuilt under its current name on April 1, 1889. Asahi has not been involved in any territorial reform since it was established as a local administrative unit.
