Sakaki ( Japanese 坂 城 町 , -machi ) is a city in Nagano Prefecture on the Japanese main island of Honshū and the only commune in Hanishina-gun . The administrative area of the city had an area of 53.64 km² and 14,310 inhabitants on October 1, 2019.

Sakaki is located in the north of Nagano Prefecture and borders the major cities of Nagano and Ueda . The Chikuma , the longest river in Japan, flows through Sakaki .
history
In 1682 Itakura Shigetane Sakaki received a permanent house ( jin'ya ) as a fiefdom, but under his son Shigehiro it became an imperial immediate area ( bakuryō ) again in 1702 . On May 18, 1886, it changed its spelling from 坂 木 to 坂 城 , but this did not affect the pronunciation.
On April 1, 1889, with the establishment of the modern communal structure, it became a mura (village). Sakaki became a city on July 12, 1904 and has remained an independent municipality to the present day. The last change in the urban area took place on April 1, 1960.

The Shinano Tetsudō line of the private railway company Shinano Tetsudō runs through Sakaki , where the Sakaki and Tekuno Sakaki stations are located in Sakaki. Furthermore, the route of the Nagano Shinkansen runs through Sakaki, but without a train station there.
Sakaki is connected to the Jōshin'etsu highway via the Sakaki junction . In addition, National Road 18 runs through Sakaki.
Educational institutions
There are three municipal primary schools and one middle school in Sakaki. There is also a high school that is funded by the prefecture.
