Saku ( Japanese 佐 久 市 , -shi ) is a city in the east of Nagano Prefecture on the Japanese main island of Honshu .

Saku is west of Takasaki and southeast of Nagano .
Saku also boasts of being the furthest city in Japan from the sea.
history
The "old" city of Saku was founded on April 1, 1961 from the former parishes of Nozawa, Nakagomi, Azuma and Asama.
On April 1, 2005 , Saku merged with the cities of Usuda and Mochizuki and the village of Asashina to form the "new" city of Saku.

Saku is home to the University of Saku and the short high school Shinshū. There are also several middle and high schools in the city.
