Ballast of the republic The Crash of the Republic
(2013)

Ballast der Republik is the fifteenth studio album by the rock band Die Toten Hosen . It was produced by Vincent Sorg and released on May 4th, 2012 on the band's own label, JKP , as a single as well as a double album, together with the anniversary album The Ghosts We Called . The additional album The Ghosts We Called mainly contains cover versions and is not available separately.

Ballast der Republik contains 16 German-language pieces of music, in which the band partly presents their point of view and their impressions as citizens of the Federal Republic of Germany . It refers to the old and the new federal states and their common history. Some of the lyrics were created in a collaboration between the band's front man from Düsseldorf , Campino , and the hip-hop musician Marteria from Rostock . The rock hymn days like this was added to the album as the first single in March 2012.

Cover

The front of the packaging, designed by Dirk Rudolph , shows a collage in black and white with symbols and photos of personalities and buildings in the FRG and the GDR ; This includes portraits of the band members, taken by Slavica Ziener . Despite the mask on, you can see Konrad Adenauer and Angela Merkel , who is wearing 3D glasses . In the foreground is a combination of hammer and compass from the national coat of arms of the German Democratic Republic and the German federal eagle in gold.

Emergence

In addition to Vincent Sorg, with whom the band has been working since 2007, Tobias Kuhn was hired as a co-producer in autumn 2011 . When writing the texts, Campino was mainly assisted by Marteria; Birgit Minichmayr helped with texts like this . The band was made up of the musicians Andreas von Holst and Michael Breitkopf on guitars, Andreas Meurer on bass, Vom Ritchie on drums and Campino as lead singer.

The album was recorded, mixed and mastered in the Principal Studios from October 2011 to March 2012 . As in previous productions, the band increasingly uses string and wind instruments. The recordings for this were made in the Easy Sound Studios in Cologne. Guest musicians were Thomas Schmitz on cello, Constanze Sannemüller and Adrian Bleyer on violin and Iryna Bayeva on viola, conducted by Dietmar Mensinger , who was also responsible for arranging the classical instruments.

The album begins with the almost one and a half minute instrumental piece Drei Kreuze (that we are here) , dog whine and the sounds of a viola convey a gruesome cemetery atmosphere . After a short break, the title song Ballast der Republik follows , in which the authors Campino and rapper Marteria deal with the state of the nation and discover that both new and old federal states carry the same baggage of the past with them.

Campino explains on the band's homepage in March 2012 about the theme of the song “ Tage wie This ”: “Ultimately, it's also about celebrating the moment. The way you go to a concert or a party with a friend and know that this is one of those evenings, a moment that may not come back like this. The song describes such a situation. ”The group published a Spanish version of the piece of music with the title Días Como Estos on August 14, 2012 on their homepage. The translation was written by Sebastián Teysera from the band La Vela Puerca from Uruguay .

Sad for a Summer deals with the fleeting grief of fans for prominent deceased musicians. To be named Jim Morrison , Sid Vicious , Bon Scott , Rex Gildo and Michael Jackson . The following melodic , hymn-like piece Altes Fieber is a nostalgic review of the band's own history and the shared memories of the members.

The text on Two Thirds of Love , developed jointly by Marteria and Campino , deals with the subject of alcohol and deals with the relationship between vodka and passion. The song Europa is about the hope and fate of the boat refugees .

The song Schade, how can that happen? is another anthem of the sports-loving band. It's about defeat and revenge. In the text, which was originally intended for the Düsseldorfer EG , it says: “What a shame, shit, how can that happen, how could we lose against something like that? [...] But we come back to return the favor. "

In the ballad Outside the Door , Campino works on his personal story and his relationship with his father. Campino continues the father-son story in the text of This is the moment , this time with reference to his son, at the same time he tells of his musical life with the band.

The person who talks about himself in the song Three Words is unable to pronounce the phrase “I love you”; the feelings that a woman has for a man for whom she alone puts on make-up, dresses expensively and constantly takes part in the lively nightlife of Oberhausen remain unrequited. According to Campino, the song is called Oberhausen because he remembered going to the bars in the Sterkrade district with a friend . However, the plot of the song could take place in any other city. Die Toten Hosen played one of their first concerts in what was then the Oberhausen club "Old Daddy".

The lyrics in Tear You Up and A Good Day to Fly addresses the same topic, it's about "letting go".

The line of text “We don't want to go and we don't want to stay. We are afraid to decide when and where our path ends. ”From the chorus to Everything has a reason is reminiscent of the song Should I stay, or Should I Go by The Clash .

The song Vogelfrei closes the album . Like almost all of the pieces on the album, it is written from a first-person perspective . The narrator tells from heaven how well he is after he's dead: “God makes the best coffee and nobody spits into me. [...] Champagne from the tap and New Year's Eve every day. ”The piece of music ends with the melody from the instrumental introduction to the album.

The Foxtrot She has a great Nazi! comes from the revue Weltgeschichte compliant by Fritz Grünbaum (text), music by Stephan Weiss from 1928.

Let's sing is a drinking song. According to the information in the booklet accompanying the album, the text comes from the early 17th century, allegedly from a "Count Zirben" and a " Destilie van der Vogelbeer", who are said to have lived in a complicated relationship to one another, like from their joint diaries from the year 1650 should emerge. The associated music has not survived, the new setting comes from Campino and Andreas von Holst .

The album received consistently good reviews and immediately reached number one in the charts in Germany, number one in Austria and the top of the Swiss charts. For more than 900,000 records of the album sold, the band received nine gold records in Germany , one platinum each for more than 30,000 copies in Switzerland and more than 20,000 copies in Austria. (As of March 2019).

The band Die Toten Hosen received several awards at the Echo Awards 2013 on March 21, 2013. She received the award for “Best Group National Rock / Pop”, for Ballast der Republik as “Album of the Year 2012” and the song “ Tage Like This ” as “Hit of the Year 2012”. In addition, they presented the song Today here, tomorrow there at a joint appearance with Hannes Wader .

Birgit Fuß from Rolling Stone is of the opinion that Die Toten Hosen would not have sounded so compelling for a long time and "bundle their forces efficiently" on ballast of the republic as they have not done since the album away game . In addition, Die Toten Hosen would have “long since ceased to be a dilettante”, one would hear that from the “more varied instrumentation”.

Alexander Cordas at laut.de described Ballast der Republik as "a late work easily shot from the hip" of the band. Die Toten Hosen would “not present any more over-song”, but with the album they would have created “an extremely entertaining work that sounds very informal and seems as if it did not cost the band too much agony.”

Andreas Schulz from the online magazine Musikreviews.de joins the positive reviews and describes the album as "the perfect balancing act between traditional pants-punk and the more grown-up pants-rock of recent years." It offers "the unmistakable pants sound that characteristic guitar playing by Kuddel and Breiti and the always beautiful melancholy melodies that spread a certain Rhenish melancholy. "

In the culture section of Focus magazine it says: “In its 30th anniversary year, the veteran gang from the Rhine presents itself more than ever old-fashioned and not angry. Die Toten Hosen don't accuse the republic of ballast , they don't want to improve the world or provoke the hell out of it. They just want to: entertain. "

Joachim Hiller from Ox-Fanzine , on the other hand, judges days like these as “pounding along” and criticizes his “ingratiating simplicity”. He also writes: “Beer tent, humpahumpatäterä! The trousers have never been more carnival and stadium, and never more unbearable. "
