Local history

The name Bergatreute suggests a settlement in the first millennium AD. The name is likely to come from a clan chief called Berengar who founded a settlement in a clearing. Since 1268 the place belonged to the Landvogtei Swabia , which in 1486 fell to Front Austria . As part of the Peace of Pressburg , the area came to Württemberg in 1805 , where it belonged to the Oberamt Waldsee from 1806 to 1934, then to the Waldsee district from 1934 to 1938, with which it then came to the Ravensburg district in 1938 .

The parish and pilgrimage church of St. Philippus and Jacobus is the landmark and most important building in terms of art history by Bergatreute . The construction of the baroque church was completed in 1730 after the previous parish church was no longer sufficient to accept pilgrims to the miraculous image of the Virgin Mary of the Blood. This miraculous image has been shown in Bergatreute since 1686; it is a copy of the miraculous image of Re in Piedmont.

There are six Roman Catholic chapels in the municipality, which are also known as the "Bergatreuter Kapellenkranz":

  • Chapel of St. George in Gwigg, 1718 (in the 18th century a branch church of Haisterkirch ); Equipment: Figures of St. Konrad and Norbert
  • Abetsweiler chapel , probably first half of the 17th century, furnishings: high altar (mid-18th century), Coronation of Mary from the Zürn workshop (around 1630)
  • Furt Chapel , probably first half of the 17th century
  • Witschwende Chapel , second half of the 18th century
  • Gambach Chapel , 1860
  • Bergatreute cemetery chapel , 1895/1896

Furthermore, in Bergatreute with the Gasthaus Adler there is a certificate of the postal system in Upper Swabia. From 1530 the Upper Austrian course ran from Innsbruck via Füssen, Bergatreute, Markdorf, Stockach, Neustadt (Black Forest), Freiburg, into Alsace to Ensisheim. The monument was also the seat of the Upper Austrian government council.
