The Borough of Stockton-on-Tees is an administrative unit ( unitary authority ) in the northeast of England . The administrative headquarters are in the town of Stockton-on-Tees ; the borough belongs to the region of North East England .

The borough's main town is Stockton-on-Tees , other towns include Thornaby-on-Tees , Yarm , Billingham and Norton . The Durham Tees Valley Airport is also within the Borough.

history

The core area of ​​the borough originally belonged to County Durham , the part on the other side of the River Tees belonged to Yorkshire . With the 1974 territorial reform, the borough became part of the newly formed county of Cleveland . It has been a unitary authority since 1996. On ceremonial occasions, the part north of the River Tees belongs to County Durham, the southern part to North Yorkshire .
