The 1998 stamp year of the Federal Republic of Germany was prepared by the Federal Ministry of Post and Telecommunications , but with its dissolution on January 1, 1998, the responsible tasks were transferred to the Federal Ministry of Finance , which will now issue the stamps.

The German Post AG was responsible for the distribution and sale. The year comprised 51 special stamps, four block editions and one definitive stamp each from the Sights and Women in German History series.

Originally, all stamps issued had unlimited postage validity . With the introduction of the euro as a common European currency on January 1, 2002, this regulation became obsolete. The stamps of this year could be used up until June 30th, 2002. An exchange was possible until September 30th in the branches of the Deutsche Post , after that until June 30th 2003 centrally in the Philately branch of Deutsche Post AG in Frankfurt.
