The Loire [ lwaːʀ ] is the French department with the atomic number 42. It is in the east of the country in the region Auvergne Rhône-Alpes and was named after the river Loire named.

The department is located on the upper reaches of the Loire River and borders the Rhône , Isère , Ardèche , Haute-Loire , Puy-de-Dôme , Allier and Saône-et-Loire departments .

history

The Loire department was created on November 19, 1793, when the Rhône-et-Loire department was divided into the Loire and Rhône departments . It essentially corresponds to the former province of Forez .
