The 24th Ice Hockey World Championship and 35th Ice Hockey European Championship took place from February 24 to March 5, 1957 in Moscow ( Soviet Union ). The venues were the Lenin Sports Palace ( Дворец спорта Центрального стадиона им. Ленина ), the Dynamo Stadium and the Lenin Stadium ( БСА Ценинального сенинон. Леного стадина . Due to the use of very large, open football stadiums, large numbers of spectators could watch the games. At the last game of the tournament, a new world record for ice hockey games was set with 50,000 spectators, some sources also speak of 55,000 spectators.

The first ice hockey world championship on Soviet soil was overshadowed by the boycott of numerous western ice hockey associations, including that of the multiple world champion Canada, who protested against the Soviet suppression of the Hungarian uprising of October 1956. In order to fill the reduced field of participants, ice hockey teams were invited that had not been qualified for the tournament. In addition to Austria, this also included the teams from Japan and the GDR , which both celebrated their World Cup premieres in Moscow. In addition, the sporting value of the tournament, which was characterized by large differences in performance between the participants, suffered. In addition to the Japanese, the German team was able to leave the qualified A-group teams from Poland and Austria behind. The host and top favorite USSR could not benefit from the absence of their toughest rival from Canada and in the end had to give way to Sweden . The Scandinavians thus secured their second World Cup and eighth European title.
