Mode and course of the tournament

This year's World Cup was the first in which professional players were allowed to take part. The USA, in particular, benefited from this, having re-established itself among the best in the world with fourth place after the relegations and promotions of the past few years. The increase in the A group to 8 teams made a new mode of hosting the World and European Championships necessary. After a simple league round, the best 4 teams then played in the championship round for the title and for the medals, the 4 remaining teams played in the so-called relegation round for places 5-8 and against relegation. The points from the preliminary round were taken over. In the EM valuation one returned to the old principle that only the World Cup placement is decisive. For Canada, which was to play in the A group again from the coming World Cup, a place had to be made free; therefore this year there were two relegations with only one promoted. The B group was temporarily increased to 9 teams.

The World Cup tournament in Poland lived off the surprising weakness of the seemingly overpowering Soviets. As in 1972 , they had great difficulty in achieving their maximum performance again after the Olympic tournament. Right at the beginning there was a sensational 4-6 defeat against host Poland, which was followed by two more defeats in the further course of the tournament. The USSR had never suffered 3 defeats in a World Cup. The sensational victory over the Soviets was ultimately of no use to the Poles; in a highly dramatic relegation battle they had to start their way into the B group after a defeat in the last minute against the team of the Federal Republic of Germany. Czechoslovakia became world champion for the fourth time and also won its 13th European title.

venue

The tournament was in Polish Katowice discharged. The venue was the Spodek Arena , which offers two ice rinks and seats 10,000 and 3,000 spectators respectively for ice hockey games. Usually the smaller ice rink is the venue of the ice hockey department of GKS Katowice .
