Winner: Finland |
The 1st ice hockey world championships of the U18 juniors of the International Ice Hockey Federation IIHF were the ice hockey world championships in 1999 in the age group of under-eighteen year olds (U18). Between February 10 and April 18, 1999, a total of 42 national teams took part in the six tournaments of the A and B world championships, European divisions I and II and Asia-Oceania divisions I and II.
The introduction of the world championship involved the amalgamation and expansion of the U18 Junior European Championship, which had been held since 1977, and the U18 Junior Championship of Asia and Oceania, which had existed since 1984, by non-European teams. The grouping of A and B groups and European divisions was based on the results of the U18 European Junior Championship in 1998 . In addition, the United States team received a wild card for the A group. From the C group area onwards, the game was played on a continental level. In Europe and Asia-Oceania there was a Division I and below that a Division II.
The first world champion was the team of Finland , which finished the final round with seven points in first place, whereby the 2-2 draw in the final tournament game against Sweden played a decisive role. The German team finished ninth in the A-World Cup, while Switzerland rounded off the good results of the German-speaking nations in the A-World Cup with fourth place. Austria finished second in the B world championship and narrowly missed promotion.
