The 26th ice hockey world championships of the U20 juniors of the International Ice Hockey Federation IIHF were the ice hockey world championships of 2002 in the age group of under-20s (U20). From December 9, 2001 to January 9, 2002, a total of 34 national teams took part in the four tournaments of the World Cup and Divisions I to III.
The world champion was the team of Russia for the eleventh time , which defeated Canada 5-4 in the final . Finland secured third place with a 5-1 win in the small final against Switzerland . The German team was able to achieve promotion to the top division with a 7-1 win in the Division I final against Austria after four years of second division.

The U20 World Cup was held from December 25, 2001 to January 4, 2002 in the Czech cities of Pardubice and Hradec Králové . The game was played in the ČEZ Aréna (10,194 places) in Pardubice and the Zimní stadium in Hradec Králové with 7,700 places.
Ten national teams took part in the tournament, playing in two groups of five teams each. The world championship title was secured by Russia, which beat Canada just 5: 4 in the final. It was the eleventh title for the Russians.

After the group matches - each team played four of them - the preliminary round, the first four in each group qualified for the quarter-finals, which, like the other rounds, were then played in the knockout system. The fifth of the group games contested a relegation according to the " Best-of-Two " mode and determined who was relegated to Division I.

Relegation round
The relegation to Division I was carried out in the " Best-of-Two " mode. In the event of a tie after winning games, the second game was continued with a sudden death overtime and, if necessary, a penalty shoot-out to determine who was relegated.
