Evan Rodrigues (born July 28, 1993 in Etobicoke , Ontario ) is a Canadian ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs of the National Hockey League since August 2020 . The winger previously spent about five years in the Buffalo Sabers organization and played briefly for the Pittsburgh Penguins .

Career

Rodrigues first spent his junior years from 2009 to 2011 with the Georgetown Raiders in the Ontario Junior Hockey League . After going undrafted , the striker enrolled at Boston University in the summer of 2011 . There he played in the following four years parallel to his studies for the ice hockey team of the university in the Hockey East , a division in the game operations of the National Collegiate Athletic Association . During the four years, the attacker collected 121 scorer points in 146 missions , was elected twice in the Second All-Star Team of Hockey East in 2013 and 2015 and also won the division championship with the team in 2015.

In April 2015 - after completing his studies - the then 21-year-old received an offer from the Buffalo Sabers from the National Hockey League and thus switched to the professional field. For their farm team , the Rochester Americans , he went on the ice at the beginning of the 2015/16 season in the American Hockey League . At the end of the season in April 2016, he finally made his debut for the Sabers in the NHL. In the course of the 2016/17 season he was used there more often, but still spent the majority of the game year with the Amerks in the AHL. In the 2018/19 season he was on the ice for the first time exclusively in the NHL.

After about five years in the organization of the Sabers, Rodrigues and Conor Sheary were handed over to the Pittsburgh Penguins for the trade deadline in February 2020 , who in return sent Dominik Kahun to Buffalo. In Pittsburgh, the Canadian was only active for almost six months before he was transferred to the Toronto Maple Leafs in August 2020 with David Warsofsky , Filip Hållander and a first-round vote in the 2020 NHL Entry Draft . In return, the penguins received Kasperi Kapanen , Jesper Lindgren and the NHL rights to Pontus Åberg .

International

Rodrigues played for his home country in the 2010 World Junior A Challenge for Canada East . With the team, the striker won the silver medal after a final defeat against the United States. Rodrigues contributed seven scorer points in five appearances to win the medal, making him the top scorer of the entire tournament. He was also elected to the competition's all-star team.
