Zach Hyman, who is of Jewish descent, was born in Toronto into a family influenced by ice hockey. His father, Stuart Hyman, a building contractor , now owned around 100 junior teams in the greater Toronto area, so that Zach Hyman, like his four younger brothers, played in his father's youth division. He did so until the 2010/11 season with the Hamilton Red Wings , for which he scored 102 scorer points in 43 games in his senior year and was voted Player of the Year for the entire Canadian Junior Hockey League . In addition, he had already been selected in the NHL Entry Draft 2010 by the Florida Panthers in 123rd position, whose training camp he attended in the following years, but could not recommend himself for a contract for the time being.

In 2010, Hyman enrolled at the University of Michigan , where he began studying history and playing for the university's ice hockey team, the Michigan Wolverines , in the National Collegiate Athletic Association . At the Wolverines, the attacker had two poor first years, with only 18 points in 79 games. His breakthrough came in his fourth and final year at the University of Michigan, when he led the Big Ten Conference in points with 22 goals and 32 assists . As a result, Hyman was elected to the Big Ten First All-Star Team and was a finalist for the Hobey Baker Memorial Award for best college player in the country.

Toronto Maple Leafs

Following his final college season, Hyman was unable to agree on a contract with the Florida Panthers, so he was handed over to the Toronto Maple Leafs in June 2016 along with a seven-round vote for the 2017 NHL Entry Draft . The Panthers received Greg McKegg in return . A few days later, Hyman signed a two-year entry contract with the Maple Leafs . In the following 2015/16 season, the Maple Leafs used him mainly with their farm team , the Toronto Marlies , in the American Hockey League (AHL). In February 2016, however, the attacker was appointed to the NHL squad for the first time and came to 16 missions by the end of the season, in which he posted four goals and two assists.

With the beginning of the 2016/17 season, Hyman established himself in the NHL squad of the Maple Leafs and was mainly used in a number alongside Auston Matthews and William Nylander . He then signed a new four-year contract in Toronto in July 2017, which should earn him an average annual salary of $ 2.25 million.
