NHL Entry Draft
|
The 2017 NHL Entry Draft took place on June 23 and 24, 2017. It was the 55th edition of this event . The venue was the United Center in Chicago in the US state of Illinois . In seven rounds, the NHL teams selected 217 players.
The New Jersey Devils chose Nico Hischier as their first overall draft pick , making him the most highly selected Swiss in NHL history. The Canadian Nolan Patrick ( Philadelphia Flyers ) and the Finn Miro Heiskanen ( Dallas Stars ) followed in second and third place .
Available players
All players born between January 1, 1997 and September 15, 1999 were eligible for the draft. In addition, all undrafted, non-North American players over the age of 20 were eligible for the draft. Also available were those players who were elected in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft and who had not signed an entry contract with their original draft club by the time of the 2017 Entry Draft .
Draft order
Legend : First right to vote Second right to vote Third right to vote
|
|
The draft order of all teams that did not reach the playoffs in the 2016/17 season was determined by the draft lottery. As was only introduced in the previous year, not only the first right to vote was raffled, but also the second and third; the probability of winning (see table for the first right to vote) was adjusted from drawing to drawing, depending on which team received the right to vote. However, the chances of winning were not the same as those from the previous year, but were reduced proportionally, as the league's new franchise , the Vegas Golden Knights , also take part in the lottery and draft. The Golden Knights were given the same chances of winning as the third worst team in the league, so the team was guaranteed at least one top six draft pick. In all further rounds, the new franchise should be allowed to vote in third position.
The draft lottery took place on April 29, 2017, with the New Jersey Devils being awarded the first right to vote and thus climbing four places. The second right to vote went to the Philadelphia Flyers , who improved their position by eleven places before the Dallas Stars won the third and final lottery, climbing five places.
The draft order of the 16 playoff participants was determined after the Stanley Cup final. The Stanley Cup winner Pittsburgh was placed on position 30, the final opponent Nashville on position 29. The teams eliminated in the conference finals (Anaheim, Ottawa) were sorted into positions 27 and 28. The remaining playoff teams were set based on their standings in the regular season. The rule was that the team with the fewest table points was in 15th position. The draft order applied to all rounds of the Entry Draft, so the lottery only changed the order of the first round of voting. In addition, the teams could acquire voting rights from other teams via transfers as well as give their own to other teams.

With Nico Hischier , a Swiss was selected for the first time in the first overall position; before that, Nino Niederreiter ( 2010 , position 5) was the highest drafted confederate. With regard to the nationality of the selected players (see table), the trend of recent years continued, so that the proportion of European players rose from 31% (2014) to 36% (2015) and 33% (2016) to 41% . Over 40% was last achieved in the years 2000 to 2002. In this context, a new record was set with six Finns elected in the first round (previously 2002 , 5 players). Furthermore, Alexandre Texier was not only the first player trained in France to be considered in the NHL Entry Draft, but also the most highly selected player born in France (previously Xavier Ouellet , 2011 , position 48).
