Evelyn F. Murphy (born May 14, 1940 in Ancón , Panama ) is an American politician . She was lieutenant governor of the state of Massachusetts from 1987 to 1991 .

Career

Evelyn Murphy was born in Panama, where her father was a US Army soldier in the Canal Zone . Shortly after she was born, she came to live with her grandparents in Massachusetts. She graduated from Duke University in North Carolina and Columbia University in New York City . Her areas of expertise were mathematics and economics. Politically, she joined the Democratic Party . From 1975 to 1979 she was Secretary of the Environment for the Massachusetts State Government. In 1979 she was appointed chairman of the National Advisory Committee on Oceans and Atmosphere by President Jimmy Carter . In 1982 she unsuccessfully sought her party's nomination for election to lieutenant governor. This went to John Kerry . Murphy was her state's Secretary of Commerce from 1983 to 1985.

In 1986 Evelyn Murphy was elected lieutenant governor of Massachusetts alongside Michael Dukakis . She held this office between 1987 and 1991. She was Deputy Governor . The relationship with Dukakis was rather bad. In 1990 Murphy intended to run in the gubernatorial primary. However, she withdrew this application after political differences with Dukakis and in view of her declining poll numbers.

Murphy began a career in the private sector in 1991, which she continues to do today. She has become the administrative director of various companies and organizations including some banks. In the meantime, she founded the Blue Cross HealthCare Policy Institute . She also made a name for herself through the WAGE project, which campaigns for equal pay between men and women. Over the course of her life, she has received numerous awards at the federal, state and local levels.
