Karyn Polito (2018)

Karyn Polito (* 11. November 1966 in Shrewsbury , Massachusetts ) is an American politician of the Republican Party . She had been a member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives since 2001 and was elected lieutenant governor of her state in 2014. She took office as deputy to the new governor Charlie Baker on January 8, 2015.

Life

Polito first attended Boston College , which she graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1988 . She later also completed a course at the New England School of Law . Professionally, she was also temporarily active in the real estate industry. As a member of the Republican Party, Shewsbury was a member of the city council of her hometown.

In November 2000 she ran successfully for the House of Representatives from Massachusetts , to which she has been a member since January 2001. Polito was regularly confirmed in office every two years up to and including 2012. In some elections she was even able to win her mandate unopposed. In the Chamber of Parliament she was a member of the committees on telecommunications, work and drug abuse. In 2010 she ran for her party as State Treasurer , the first time for a state post; however, she had to admit defeat to the Democratic incumbent Steven Grossman .

In December 2013, she declared her candidacy for lieutenant governor of Massachusetts. In the internal party primary of the Republicans, Polito was elected unanimously. Although the primary elections for the post of governor and his deputy are held separately in Massachusetts, both are on the ballot as a duo on the actual election day. In the gubernatorial election on November 4, 2014 , she therefore ran together with Charlie Baker , the Republican candidate for governorship . Baker had supported her candidacy for lieutenant governor from the start. After Baker's narrow victory over the Democrat Martha Coakley , Polito was elected lieutenant governor of her state. Like Baker, she took up her new post as Deputy Governor on January 8, 2015. For the 2018 gubernatorial election she was again Governor Baker's running mate . The duo prevailed on election day with almost 67% of the vote and was confirmed for another four years. This election victory, which was accompanied by unfavorable conditions for the Republicans nationally, was due in particular to Baker's extremely high popularity and his work as head of government.

Unlike the socio-politically liberal Baker, Polito stands for a more conservative course in her party. Unlike Baker, she expressed skepticism about equality of same-sex marriages . With their candidacy for lieutenant governor, the Republicans also wanted to appeal to voters for whom Baker was considered too moderate.

Karyn Polito is married and has two children.
