Levi Lincoln Jr. (born October 25, 1782 in Worcester , Massachusetts , † May 29, 1868 ibid) was an American politician and governor of the state of Massachusetts from 1825 to 1834 . Between 1834 and 1841 he represented his state in the US House of Representatives .

Early years

Levi Lincoln was a member of a well-known family of politicians. His father Levi was governor of Massachusetts between 1808 and 1809. His brother Enoch was governor of Maine from 1827 to 1829 , as was his great-nephew Frederick Robie from 1883 to 1887. He was also extensively related to President Abraham Lincoln . The younger Levi Lincoln attended Leicester Academy and then Harvard University until 1802 . After studying law, he began working as a lawyer in Worcester in 1805.

Political rise

Lincoln was initially a member of the Democratic Republican Party . Between 1812 and 1813 he was a member of the State Senate and from 1814 to 1822 he was a member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives . In 1822 he was the successor to Luther Lawrence President of this Chamber and in 1820 a delegate at a conference on the revision of the state constitution. Levi Lincoln served as Lieutenant Governor of Massachusetts from 1823 to 1824 and then briefly served as a judge on the Massachusetts Supreme Court . In 1824 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .

Governor and Congressman

On April 4, 1825, Lincoln was elected the new governor of his state. After he was re-elected for the next eight years, he was able to exercise this office between May 26, 1825 and January 2, 1834. After the dissolution of his party, he became a member of the newly formed Whig Party . His tenure as governor was relatively uneventful. There was only one dispute between the state of Massachusetts and the private operators of a bridge structure. In 1833 the governor declined to run again. Instead, he was elected to Congress as a Whig Party candidate . There he represented the interests of his state between February 17, 1834 and March 16, 1841. In Congress he chaired the Public Property Management Committee.

Another résumé

After resigning from the House of Representatives, he became head of customs in Boston . Between 1844 and 1845 he was once again a member of the State Senate; In 1845 he was its president. In 1848 Levi Lincoln became Mayor of Worcester. After the Whig Party broke up in the 1850s, Lincoln became a member of the new Republican Party . In 1860 and 1864, he supported Abraham Lincoln's respective presidential campaigns. In 1864 he elected the president as an elector. Levi Lincoln died in May 1868. He had eight children with his wife Penelope Winslow Sever.
