George R. Stobbs

George Russell Stobbs (born February 7, 1877 in Webster , Worcester County , Massachusetts , †  December 23, 1966 in Worcester , Massachusetts) was an American politician . Between 1925 and 1931 he represented the state of Massachusetts in the US House of Representatives .

Career

George Stobbs attended the common schools and then the Phillips Exeter Academy in Exeter ( New Hampshire ). He then studied until 1899 at Harvard University . After studying law at the same university and being admitted to the bar in 1902, he began to work in this profession in Worcester. Between 1909 and 1916 he served as a judge in the Worcester Judicial District. Between 1917 and 1920 he was a captain in the Massachusetts National Guard. He was also the assistant prosecutor at the time.

Politically, Stobbs was a member of the Republican Party . In the 1924 congressional election , he was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the fourth constituency of Massachusetts , where he succeeded Samuel Winslow on March 4, 1925 . After two re-elections, he was able to complete three legislative terms in Congress by March 3, 1931 . In 1926, he was a member of the congressmen charged with conducting impeachment proceedings against Federal Judge George W. English . In 1930 he was a delegate at an inter-parliamentary conference in London .

In the same year, Stobbs waived another congressional candidacy. From 1927 to 1942 he worked as a major or lieutenant colonel in the Judge Advocate General's Department . In June 1932 he took part as a delegate at the Republican National Convention in Chicago , at which President Herbert Hoover was nominated for re-election, which ultimately failed. In 1940 and 1942, Stobbs was also a delegate to regional Republican conventions in Massachusetts. Otherwise he practiced as a lawyer again. He died in Worcester on December 23, 1966.
