James Buffinton

James Buffinton (born March 16, 1817 in Fall River , Massachusetts , †  March 7, 1875 there ) was an American politician . Between 1855 and 1875 he twice represented the state of Massachusetts in the US House of Representatives .

Career

James Buffinton attended the common schools and the Friends College in Providence ( Rhode Iceland ). He studied medicine, but without ever working as a doctor. In the following years he worked in his hometown of Fall River in commerce. In the years 1854 and 1855 he also served there as mayor. He first became a member of the American Party and then the Republican Party, founded in 1854 .

In the congressional election of 1854 Buffinton was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the second constituency of Massachusetts , where he succeeded Samuel L. Crocker on March 4, 1855 . After three re-elections, he was able to complete four legislative terms in Congress by March 3, 1863 . These were initially shaped by the events leading up to the civil war until 1861 and then by the war itself. From 1861 to 1863 Buffinton was chairman of the Committee on Accounts and the Military Committee.

In 1862, James Buffinton declined to run again. Between 1867 and 1869 he headed the federal treasury for the state of Massachusetts. In the elections of 1868 he was re-elected to Congress in the first district of his state, where he replaced Thomas D. Eliot on March 4, 1869 . After three re-elections, he was able to exercise this mandate until his death on March 7, 1875. From 1871 he headed the Committee on Accounts again .
