Career

In the club

Youth and breakthrough at Atlético Madrid

Torres had played for Atlético Madrid's youth teams for six years before becoming a professional player. In 1998, he and his youth team won an international tournament organized by the sporting goods manufacturer Nike . He was honored as the best player in the competition. In 1999 the attacker signed his first professional contract with the Madrilenians. At the beginning of the 2000/01 season, Torres had to contend with an injury and therefore had to take a break for a long time. His league debut in the first team of Atlético, which then played briefly in the second Spanish division, finally gave Torres at the age of 17 on May 27, 2001 against CD Leganés . In his second league game against Albacete Balompié on June 3, 2001, the attacker then scored his first league goal. At the end of the season, the Madrid club had been promoted to the Primera División . After Atletico's promotion to the Primera División, he made his first division debut against FC Barcelona on September 1, 2002 and scored 13 goals in 29 games in his first first division season.

In the following years, the then young player took off and regularly scored goals. With the Greek Demis Nikolaidis he formed a sure storm for Atletico in the following period. Torres was named captain of the team at the age of 19. The striker always performed well and attracted top European clubs with his numerous hits.

World class striker at Liverpool FC

English clubs in particular, such as Chelsea and Liverpool FC , advertised the attacker. On July 4, 2007, Torres' move to Liverpool was finally announced at a press conference. The farewell was already apparent shortly before, when Atletico already signed Diego Forlán as a replacement. The transfer fee is estimated at 38 million euros. In Liverpool he signed a six-year contract and is said to have earned around eight million euros per season. In his second league game, he scored his first Premier League goal on August 19, 2007 against Chelsea.

In February 2008 he was named Player of the Month. At the end of the season he finished with 24 goals together with Emmanuel Adebayor in second place in the Premier League scorers list behind Cristiano Ronaldo with 31 goals. The last time a Liverpool striker scored more than twenty goals in one year was in 1995/96, then in the person of Robbie Fowler . He also replaced Ruud van Nistelrooy as the best foreign goalscorer in the first Premier League year. These achievements earned him, among other things, a nomination for the squad of the PFA Team of the Year , as well as a second place in the election for the best player on improved terms. In the 2008/09 season, Torres scored 14 goals and provided 5 assists in 24 Premier League games . In addition, he scored two goals in the Champions League and one in the FA Cup. In the 2009/10 season Torres was slowed down by injuries and had to have two knee operations. Although he only came to 22 games in the Premier League, he scored 18 goals and served his teammates with three assists. In the Europa League he scored in all four games, even though he only played one of those games in full. He scored these important goals in the last sixteen and quarter-finals. With a brace in the second leg at Anfield Road, he made sure to reach the semi-finals. In the semifinals, Liverpool lost to Atletico Madrid - Torres' home club - in extra time, Torres missed both games. In the Premier League, Torres scored a total of 56 goals in 79 games.

With his goal on December 29, 2009 against Aston Villa , he set a new club record. Torres is the Liverpool player to reach 50 goals fastest. He only needed 72 games for this.

Career break despite the title at Chelsea

Fernando Torres at Chelsea FC (2012)

On January 31, 2011, Chelsea signed Torres for the record British transfer fee of 50 million pounds (around 58 million euros). He signed a contract for the next five and a half years ending June 30, 2016 and earned £ 175,000 a week. Thus, he finished sixth in the international transfer records in football and first place within the Premier League . Torres made his debut for his new club on February 6, 2011 (26th day of the Premier League) in the 0-1 home defeat of Chelsea FC against his old club Liverpool and was replaced in the 66th minute by Salomon Kalou . In the following twelve competitive games, he scored no goal. The kicker sports magazine therefore called his debut at Chelsea a "goalless tragedy". Torres became a substitute and was not spared from the ridicule of fans. Internet sites counted his goalless minutes and t-shirts that said “I was there when Torres scored” were sold. On April 23, 2011, Torres scored his first goal for Chelsea in a 3-0 home win against West Ham United after being substituted on for Didier Drogba in the 77th minute . Across all competitions, he needed 903 minutes of play for his first goal. On April 29, 2012 Torres scored three goals against the Queens Park Rangers . This was his first hat trick for Chelsea.

On May 19, 2012, he won the Champions League with Chelsea FC by beating FC Bayern Munich on penalties. In this competition Torres had provided four assists and scored three goals himself. On May 15, 2013 he defeated Benfica Lisbon with his club by a 2-1 in the final and won the Europa League. With six goals, he finished fourth in the competition's top scorer list. He and his compatriot and former teammate Juan Mata are the first players to be world champions, European champions, Champions League winners and Europa League winners at the same time. On January 11, 2014 Torres completed his 200th Premier League game.

Via Milan back to Atlético Madrid

Fernando Torres (2018)

On August 31, 2014 Torres moved on loan to the Italian Serie A at AC Milan . In Milan, too, he was unable to build on his old achievements. Torres was under head coach Filippo Inzaghi in 10 Serie A games by the end of the year (7 times in the starting line-up) and scored one goal.

With the opening of the winter transfer window in January 2015, AC Milan acquired the transfer rights to Torres in exchange for Alessio Cerci to loan him to his home club Atlético Madrid until June 30, 2016 . Torres was number 19 and was presented in front of 45,000 fans at the Estadio Vicente Calderón . Torres played his first game for Atlético in seven and a half years on January 8, 2015 in a 2-0 win against Real Madrid in the first leg of the first leg of the Copa del Rey under coach Diego Simeone , with whom he was still at from 2003 to 2005 Atlético had played together. In the second leg on January 15, 2015 Torres scored both goals for Atlético in a 2-2 draw at the Estadio Santiago Bernabéu . In the meantime, he played for the first time in the Primera División on January 11, 2015 , when he came on for Gabi in the 67th minute of the 3-1 defeat at FC Barcelona .

On February 6, 2016, Torres scored his 100th goal for Atlético Madrid in a 3-1 home win against SD Eibar .

At the beginning of July 2016, Torres extended his contract until the end of the 2016/17 season , so that the transfer rights have since been held in full by Atlético Madrid.

In the same season, there was an accident during the league game against Deportivo La Coruña : After Torres collided with Deportivo's defender Alex Bergantinos in the 85th minute , he hit the grass with no brakes, lost consciousness and swallowed his tongue. Torres' teammates Gabi and Šime Vrsaljko pulled them out again and saved his life as he threatened to suffocate. After 7 minutes of treatment on the field and a subsequent examination, Torres was able to leave the hospital the next day.

At the beginning of July 2017, Torres extended his contract for another year until the end of the 2017/18 season . In April 2018, Torres announced that this would be his last season for the club. However, he does not want to end his career. In May 2018 he won the Europa League with Atlético . In his last competitive game on the last day of the game, he scored two of his five league goals this season in a 2-2 draw against SD Eibar .

Career end in Japan

In July 2018, Torres joined the Japanese first division club Sagan Tosu . By the end of the 2018 season , he played in 17 league games and scored three goals. In June 2019, Torres announced his retirement.

In the national team

At the U-16 European Championship , Torres was voted top scorer and best player of the tournament. In the final he scored the winning goal for Spain against France and secured the title for his team. The same was repeated at the U-19 European Championship .

Torres made his debut in the Spanish national team on September 6, 2003. On April 28, 2004 he scored his first goal for the Spanish selection as the youngest player to date. He took part in the 2004 European Championship in Portugal, where he was used three times and was a regular player and three-time goalscorer at the 2006 World Cup in Germany.

In the second group game of the European Championship in 2008 against Sweden , he scored the 1-0 opening goal for the Spaniards. In the final against Germany he scored the winning goal to 1-0 in the 33rd minute of play and made Spain European champions for the second time in 44 years.

On June 14, 2009 Torres scored three goals within 17 minutes in the Confederations Cup game against underdog New Zealand . On July 11, 2010, he won the 2010 World Cup in South Africa with the national team . Spain beat the Netherlands 1-0 in the final after extra time.

On July 1, 2012, Torres became European champions for the second time at the 2012 European Championships with the Spanish national team after beating Italy 4-0 in the final . He came on as a substitute in the 75th minute, scored the third goal for Spain in the 84th minute and then put the 4-0 through Juan Mata on. With a total of three goals and one assist, he was the top scorer in the final due to goal and assist, after the German Mario Gómez had also topped the scorers list with three goals and one assist. However, Fernando Torres needed fewer minutes of play as a substitute. In the Spanish starting lineup he was only in the preliminary round matches against Ireland and Croatia at the European Championship . Otherwise, after the failure of David Villa , the team preferred to play without a real center forward.

On September 7, 2012, he played his 100th international match for Spain against Saudi Arabia . He is the sixth and was also the youngest Spanish international to reach the 100 mark.

On June 20, 2013, he scored four goals in the Confederations Cup in the game against Tahiti ; Spain won the game 10-0. With a total of five goals and an assist in 273 minutes of play, he was the top scorer of the competition.

At the 2014 World Cup in Brazil , he was substituted on in the opening game against the Netherlands, which was lost 5-1, and in the second game against Chile , which was lost 2-2; both defeats led to the early departure of the Spaniards. On June 23, 2014, Torres made his last game for the Spanish national team in the last and insignificant group game in the Arena da Baixada in Curitiba against Australia, which was also eliminated , when he was in the starting line-up and scored the goal to 2-0; Spain won 3-0.
