The Piarco International Airport is an airport on the island of Trinidad and the airport for the Trinidadian capital Port of Spain . In addition to Crown Point Airport , it is one of two international airports currently in operation in Trinidad and Tobago. It is located about 27 kilometers southeast of Port of Spain on the southern edge of the densely populated East-West Corridor .
history
Piarco Airport was opened on January 8, 1931 as a simple tarmac; previously, planes landed at Queen's Park Savannah in the middle of Port of Spain. Initially, only small mail planes were allowed to take off and land in Piarco. The airline BWIA , founded in 1939, began scheduled flights to and from Piarco on November 28, 1940; initially a Lockheed Model 18 served Tobago and Barbados . During the Second World War, three squadrons of the US Air Force were stationed at the airport, which was used again for civil aviation after the war. In 2001 a new terminal was built for Piarco to expand flight operations. In 2006 the airport received the World Travel Award in the "Caribbean's Leading Airport" category.
Structure and facilities
The terminal is around 35,900 square meters. The construction of the new terminal was completed on November 25, 2011. The North Terminal is intended for business travelers and houses 29 gates with 14 passenger boarding bridges . The existing terminal is now called the South Terminal. There is a shopping mall that was built in 2006. The commercial airport is large enough to accommodate important commercial aircraft such as the Boeing 737 , Boeing 747 , Boeing 777 or the Airbus A340 .
