Frank-Michael "Potti" Wahl (born August 24, 1956 in Rostock ) is a former handball player and trainer .

Wahl began his athletic career as a swimmer . He was GDR youth champion in the 100 m dolphin swim and multiple Spartakiade winner . When he later switched to handball, he was nicknamed "Potti", a derivative of Pottwa (h) l.

Wahl played in the GDR Oberliga for SC Empor Rostock , with whom he won three GDR championships and seven FDGB cups . Internationally, he won the European Cup Winners' Cup and the European Club Championship in 1982 together with Empor Rostock . He was also the top scorer in the league four times (1981/82, 1982/83, 1984/85 and 1985/86). In 1982, 1985 and 1987 he was voted handball player of the year .

In 1990 Wahl switched to the then second division club SG Hameln , with whom he was promoted to the handball Bundesliga a year later . In June 1993 he ended his active career. As part of his farewell game between VfL Hameln and the German team, he was named the first honorary captain of the German national team. He then played for the second division TSG Altenhagen-Heepen and TSG Emmerthal, with whom he rose from the regional league to the league within two years.

Wahl played a total of 344 international matches (including 313 for the GDR national team ) and scored 1,412 goals. He is the record scorer of the German national teams. After the fall of the Wall, he played 31 more international matches for the German national team and scored 74 goals. He celebrated his greatest successes with the GDR national team, with whom he took third place at the World Cup (WM) in 1978 and the 1986 World Cup . At the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow , he was Olympic champion with the team .

After his active career, Wahl was, among other things, sporting director, then co-trainer under Alfreð Gíslason and, after his dismissal, team boss (trainer without a trainer's license) at VfL Hameln . He took over VfL in the second Bundesliga in January 1999, but was dismissed as leader of the table in the following season 1999/2000 despite a seven-point lead over the second and replaced by Michael Biegler .

After that, Wahl , who lives in Hessisch Oldendorf, was under contract with the upper league club HF Springe , where his son Gordon also played. After the change of his son and lack of sporting success, Wahl was released shortly before Christmas 2007. For the 2008/2009 season, he initially agreed to HSG Exten-Rinteln (WSL-Oberliga men), but ended the contract 14 days before the start of the season via SMS in order to be able to confirm with the top division TV 87 Stadtoldendorf. This engagement ended on March 17, 2009, Wahl and TV Stadtoldendorf (table ninth) parted ways by mutual agreement.
