The Habichtswälder Bergland , mostly just called Habichtswald , is a 209 km² large and in the Hohen Habichtswald on Hohen Gras up to 614.8 m above sea level. NHN high and special in the high areas of its mountain ranges wooded low mountain range in northern Hesse . Most of it is in the Kassel district , but also encompasses the city of Kassel in the east and the Schwalm-Eder district in the south .
The mountainous region naturally represents the main unit 342 in the West Hessian mountain and sink region (main unit group 34) and is divided into several merging mountain ranges, which extend north to almost the Diemel , to the south close to the upper reaches of the Eder tributary Ems and to the west pull to the Twiste tributary Erpe . Its extension in north-north-west-south-south-east direction is a good 25 km with a width of about 10 km.
Location and limits
The Habichtswälder Bergland is mainly located in the Habichtswald Nature Park .
The contiguous forest area of the low mountain range Hoher Habichtswald occupies the east of the mountain range , which extends into the built-up areas of the Kassel city area and at the same time represents the highest mountain area (max. 614.8 m ). This part of the mountain is separated to the north by the natural area Dörnbergpass from the massif of the Hohen Dörnberg with the adjoining horror mountains to the north (both in the natural area Dörnberg and Schreckenberge ), which merge approximately to the northwest into the Malsburger forest as the northernmost part of the landscape.
South of the Hohen Habichtswald is the Hoofer Pforte , which leads to the Langenberge , which is in turn south of it and also in the south of the mountainous region . From the gate, the Habichtswälder depression with the warmth stretches towards the north-northwest and separates the Hinterhabichtswälder peaks to the west from the eastern ridges of the Hoher Habichtswald and Dörnberg and Schreckenberge .

Waters
River systems
The Habichtswälder Bergland is divided into two roughly equal halves by the watershed between Fulda and Diemel , which comes from the west over the peaks of Wattenberg , Lindenberg , Hohem Gras and Hohen Dörnberg and leaves the natural area in a north-easterly direction.
The north half, which drains to the Diemel, is in turn divided into two halves by the heat flowing north along the Habichtswälder depression . The warmth also drains the northern half of the mountainous region almost completely - only in the west the Erpe carries some water to the Twiste and the small Calenberger Bach some directly to the Diemel.
The west of the southern half of the mountainous region drains via the Ems to the southeast, in its west also via tributaries of the Elbe to the south and in its southeast via the Pilgerbach to the east towards the Eder. In contrast, the streams in the east of the landscape, especially Bauna , Drusel and Ahne , flow directly east to the Fulda.
The mountain region is divided by river valleys and the A 44
The river valleys of the Warme, Bauna and Ems play a special role in the structure of the Habichtwald mountain range. While the Habichtswälder Depression that accompanies the upper reaches of the Warm separates the Hinterhabichtswald peaks of the Hohem Habichtswald to the west and the Dörnberg and Schreckenberge natural area to the north , the Hoofer Gate that accompanies the upper reaches of the Bauna separates the Hohen Habichtswald from the Langenberge to the south . The Ems in turn runs through the source of the Breitenbacher Mulde , as the south of the Habichtswälder valley is also called. Its tributary Wiehoff forms the border between the Langenberge and Hinterhabichtswälder peaks in the course of the source.
The Bundesautobahn 44 follows from Kassel from the Bauna upriver towards the north-west into the Hoofer Pforte and crosses the Fulda-Diemel watershed in the north-east of the Breitenbacher Mulde, to the west parallel to the warm one downstream to the north through the Zierenberger Grund , the north of the Habichtswälder valley, to follow. At the northern junction with the Malsburg Forest , it finally swings to the west in order, outside of the Habichtswald, to more or less follow the Erpe or the Twiste to the northwest in the future. As a result, the motorway forms a fairly precise dividing line between a southwest half of the mountainous region with the Hinterhabichtswälder Kuppen, Langenbergen and the valley basins Breitenbacher Mulde and Hoofer Pforte on the one hand and the northeast half with Hohem Habichtswald, Dörnberg and Schreckenbergen, Malsburger Wald and the valley basin Zierenberger Grund.
Flowing waters
In the following - according to size or importance as a natural border river - flowing waters of the Habichtswälder Bergland and the directly adjacent mountain ranges, arranged clockwise, starting on the west side of the Fulda-Diemel watershed, are listed.
For a better overview or for sorting downstream, depending on the river system, hyphens are inserted in the DGKZ digits after the digits of the respective main river. Rivers in italics have their source just outside, on the outer slope of the hill country.
