Hammersmith is out is an American feature film (black comedy, Faust story) directed by Peter Ustinov in 1972. It was originally called Hammersmith is out .
action
The action takes place in Texas, the time the present. Billy Breedlove, a nurse in a psychiatric hospital, falls for two people at the same time: the sex and marriage-obsessed waitress Jimmie Jean Jackson and Hammersmith, one of his patients, who is kept in a straitjacket in the closed ward. Hammersmith is a serious criminal and is shunned by other people because of the uncanny power he exudes. When Hammersmith promises Billy, who soon shows himself to be a Faustian character, fame and fortune as a reward, he helps him to freedom. Jimmie Jean accompanies them on the run, during which Hammersmith, in order to keep his promise, steals, murders and helps Billy to careers as a bar owner, company boss, oil industrialist, financier and ambassador.
While Billy hates Jimmie Jean more and more over time, Hammersmith becomes interested in her, impregnates her and ensures that Billy has a serious accident while waterskiing and ultimately kills himself.
In the end, Hammersmith is tracked down by the director of the hospital and has to return to the psychiatric ward, where he now makes great promises to another nurse ...
criticism
“What is intended as a system-critical allegory of evil and greed turns out to be an all too intrusive and meaningful 'Faust' paraphrase. The tone has to be faded, the style too long and cumbersome, so that it remains with forced efforts. "
Production and reception
The shooting for the film, which was produced in color and 35 mm, took place in Cuernavaca , Mexico. It was financed by John Crean, a manufacturer of motor homes and mobile homes (Fleetwood Enterprises). For the director, Peter Ustinov, it was the second collaboration with the screen couple Taylor / Burton; In 1967 the three actors appeared together in the film The Hour of the Comedians .
Hammersmith Is Out premiered in the US on May 12, 1972. In the Federal Republic of Germany, it was premiered at the Berlinale in June 1972. The film was a commercial failure.
Hammersmith's Out is the last movie that Taylor and Burton starred together. In 1973 there was only one more television film together, His divorce - their divorce .
