Heidi Westphal

Heidi Westphal (born July 5, 1959 in Gnoien ) is a former rower from the German Democratic Republic . In 1980 she won the Olympic silver medal in double sculls .

Heidi Westphal won the 1975 Spartakiad . At SC DHfK Leipzig she formed a new double scull in 1978 together with Cornelia Linse, who was almost the same age, and took fifth place in the GDR championship. The following year, the two won the GDR championship and then the title at the world championship in Bled. At the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow, the two rowers from the USSR Jelena Chlopzewa and Larissa Popowa won , a little over a second behind Westphal and Linse rowed for the silver medal. In 1981, Linse and Westphal switched to double fours . Westphal was vice world champion in 1981 and 1982 behind the Soviet double foursome with Chlopzewa and Popowa.

Heidi Westphal was a business clerk and worked for the trade fair office in Leipzig . After the fall of the Wall , she was with the trade fair company. In 1980 she was awarded the Patriotic Order of Merit in bronze.
