action

season 1

The plot begins in 1865, shortly after the American Civil War as part of the Reconstruction . Former Confederate soldier Cullen Bohannon hunts down his family's murderers, marauding Union soldiers who raped his wife and murdered her and his son in the war. He ends up in Hell on Wheels, the mobile tent city that accompanies the construction of the Union Pacific's first transcontinental railroad to the west. There he suspects one of the murderers.

At the same time, Thomas Durant, who is to build the railway on behalf of the Union Pacific, is looking for investors in the east of the country. Bohannon takes a job from the foreman who trusts him to be able to keep the black workforce in check as a former slave owner. Because among the workforce, which consists mainly of Irish and German immigrants and former black slaves, there is constant conflict. This is how Bohannon met the black track worker Elam Ferguson. Despite initial adversity and violent confrontations, both develop respect for one another. Nevertheless, Elam remains suspicious of Cullen's past as a slave owner, although Bohannon assures that he treated his slaves well and gave them freedom before the war (which later turns out to be a lie). Ferguson develops an affection for the prostitute Eva, who was once kept as a slave by the Indians and who was marked with a striking tattoo on her chin.

Through discussions with foreman Johnson, Bohannon learns of his involvement in the murder of his family. Before he can take revenge, Johnson is stabbed to death by Elam, to Cullen's annoyance, before he can reveal the full name of anyone else involved. Bohannon is then held responsible for Johnson's murder and imprisoned. The driving force behind it is Thor Gundersen, chief of the railway police and known as "The Swede", although he comes from Norway. Gundersen uses his position to blackmail the Hell on Wheels dealers.

Bohannon escapes his incarceration and execution and can convince Durant to employ him as a foreman from now on. Durant convinces Bohannon's experience from the war and his attitude that the route construction is basically a kind of war. With his rough but fair manner, Bohannon quickly gains respect among the workers.

In the further course of the plot there is a violent conflict with a Cheyenne tribe , whose habitat is cut by the railroad and who refuse to accept it. Between this conflict stands Joseph Black Moon, a Cheyenne who was baptized by the fanatical Reverend Cole and now stands between cultures. Joseph rescued Lily Bell, the wife of the Union Pacific surveyor, from members of his own tribe. Her husband did not survive this attack, which is why she now wants to continue his work.

Under the leadership of the two ambitious Irish brothers Sean and Mickey McGinnes, the local dealers stand up against the Swede, tar and feather him, and then chase him out of Hell on Wheels. Cullen tracks down and kills a man named Harper, but finds that it was an innocent man who had nothing to do with the death of his family. Before Bohannon can be arrested by US marshals, he escapes.

season 2

Bohannon joins a gang of former southern soldiers who are outlawing the area. At first he believes that, like him, it is about continuing the war and collecting the necessary financial means through raids. But he soon realizes that it is just an ordinary band of robbers who are only interested in personal enrichment. Elam is now working as the new chief of the railway police and he manages to arrest Bohannon when he and his gang try to rob one of the trains. Durant, however, protects himself from Cullen, because he sees in him a capable leader for the construction crew.

The Swede now works as a latrine cleaner and grave digger, which puts him at the bottom of the social ladder. However, the Swede cleverly uses the murders of a prostitute and a German rail worker to incite the Irish and Germans against each other.

The railroad now reaches areas of the Sioux . As a “white ghost” and with the help of Reverend Cole, the Swede incites the Indians against the railroad and supplies them with firearms. A Sioux attack on Hell on Wheels can be repulsed with heavy losses.

Other problems exist between Hannah Durant and Lily Bell. Thomas Durant's wife is annoyed by Lily Bell's commitment and the enthusiasm that her husband has towards it. Cullen and Lily timidly begin a relationship, but at the end of the season she is strangled by the Swede. Cullen intends to hang it on a railway bridge, but at the last moment the Swede manages to jump from the bridge into the river.

season 3

Durant is having massive problems financing the construction of the railroad and maintaining control over it. It is paid according to the length of the route built. To Durant's displeasure, Cullen is entrusted with the further construction of the railway. Cullen is sure of the sympathy of the presidential candidate Ulysses S. Grant , who Bohannon, although a former opponent of the war, greatly values. In the Kiowa area , Cullen and Elam convince the tribe to provide them with wood for further construction.

Elam and Eva became parents. Although Eva also had a relationship with Toole, who killed himself out of desperation, and the child is white, Elam sees the girl as his child. From the east coast, however, Declan Toole, the father's brother, arrives to take the daughter with him so that she can have a better life. After much hesitation, Eva agrees and gives him her child. This plunges Elam into a deep depression as he imagined a future together and it shakes their relationship badly.

Jasper Prescott shows up in Hell on Wheels to avenge his brother's death. He was involved in the massacre of Bohannon's family and was shot by Cullen in the confessional of a church at the beginning of season one. Since Cullen can't dissuade Jasper from his plan, he shoots him.

The construction of the railway comes to a halt again, as it is now supposed to lead through an area of militant Mormons who doggedly defend their area. During negotiations between representatives of the railroad and Mormons outside the Mormon settlement of Fort Smith, a railroad sheriff is shot dead. Cullen feels compelled to ensure justice. The Mormons face the threat of losing their settlement to an eviction by the US Army. Therefore, the Mormon spokesman, Aaron Hatch, delivers his son over, although his guilt seems more than doubtful. Cullen hangs the youth to ensure justice, but this sacrifice causes resentment among Mormons.

The Swede survived the high jump from the bridge at the end of the previous season. He is found by a traveling Mormon family and treated kindly. With his charismatic, manipulative manner, the Swede wins the trust of the family, but when he is converted and baptized in a river, he drowns them. Only the son Ezra can escape. The Swede assumes the identity of the murdered Bishop Dutson and travels to Fort Smith.

Now the real reason the McGinnes brothers traveled east to the railroad is revealed: In Boston, Sean was wanted as a woman murderer, which led to his escape. Mickey eyes his brother Sean with suspicion, who is about to relapse into such psychopathic behavior patterns again, as his affection is not returned by the preacher Ruth. Mickey is forced to kill his own brother.

The rails now reach the newly established Cheyenne settlement . This was founded by Durant, who first named the city after himself, as a future hub. Grant changed the name again. A group of masked men appear in Cheyenne and there is a shooting. Cullen is kidnapped by the gang - Mormons led by Aaron Hatch - and taken to Fort Smith. Although many wish him dead, the bishop, as spiritual leader, is supposed to decide on Bohannon's fate there. Only Cullen recognizes that this is the Swede, but nobody believes him. To his amazement and the annoyance of the Mormons, he spares his life, instead he is supposed to live in the settlement and marry Naomi, the daughter of Hatch, whom Cullen had impregnated on a previous visit.

Elam goes in search of his kidnapped friend and is attacked by a bear. He only kills him with a knife, but remains seriously injured. His further fate remains unclear.

Season 4

Cullen continues to live with the Mormons at Fort Smith. He promises his father-in-law to stay until his wife Naomi has given birth to their child. Nevertheless, he knows that the Swede, who still plays his role convincingly as bishop, threatens to have him shot should he try to escape. With the Mormons, Cullen encounters an ambiguous response. Some begin to respect him, others continue to despise him.

Since Bohannon has been lost for months and is believed to be dead, Durant is now again in charge of building the railway. But further construction is stalling. On the one hand this is ensured by a long winter, on the other hand by a mountain that hardly seems to be crossed or to break through. The Cheyenne settlement is thriving and Wyoming is now officially recognized as a territory by the government . Therefore, these state officials, led by Governor John Campbell , are sent to consolidate their influence. Eva tries to get by without Elam. Therefore she takes care of the prostitutes even though she is no longer active as such.

Naomi has since given birth to a boy named William after Cullen's father. To her delight, she realizes that Cullen shows them genuine affection and doesn't just see himself as a prisoner. Cullen realizes that the Swede has internalized his role so much that he actually believes he is the bishop. As a bishop he persuades Bohannon not to abandon his wife and child. With feigned remorse and a trick he manages to expose the Swede in front of the community.

Together with his wife and child, Bohannon sets off for Cheyenne, hoping to get a management position in railway construction again. Durant rejects him and so he has no choice but to work as a simple track worker and live with his family in a small tent. The disappearance of Elam is also a burden to him and Eva reproaches him because his good friend only set out to find him.

Between Durant on the one hand and Campbell and his government officials on the other, the situation is getting worse. Campbell seems too ambitious for Durant and his increasing power and influence worries him, who still sees Cheyenne as "his" city.

After fleeing Mexico, bandits and former southern soldiers Sydney Snow ended up in the city. To his delight, he meets Bohannon here, with whom he served in the war. Although the latter is initially open to him, Snow also brings back bad memories in Cullen, for example of war crimes committed together. Snow is becoming increasingly unpredictable. After his Mexican persecutors tracked him down, he not only shot them, but also an innocent shopkeeper and a young boy.

The fate of Elam will be clarified. Severely wounded from the fight with the bear, the Comanches found it. They are impressed that Elam only killed a bear with a small knife. They keep him healthy and take him into their tribe under the name "Bärentöter". Elam is mentally confused and seems to have little memories of his previous life because of his severe head injuries. The Indian-friendly trapper Jimmy Two Squaws recognizes Elam during a visit. This not only does not react to friendly persuasion, but also kills the trapper. He identifies with his new life and thus also takes part in an attack on white soldiers. He also kills his Indian blood brother in order to get possession of his white slave.

With this and Jimmy's two Indian women, Elam goes to Cheyenne to sell them there as slaves. There he caused quite a stir. Campbell threatens to have him shot. Cullen and Eva talk to Elam so that he can remember his previous life, but he doesn't recognize her. Elam becomes increasingly aggressive and attacks Cullen. He feels compelled to kill his best friend. Cullen is deeply saddened by this.

In Fort Smith, the Mormons are unsure whether the Swede is actually a con man and a murderer. This then asks for Brigham Young himself , who should make a decision. Young quickly recognizes a fraudster in Sweden, but sees him as a useful tool for his own interests. His knowledge of the railway is also of interest to Young, who is promoting the construction of a branch line for the Mormons. So he takes the Swede with him westwards as his personal secretary.

The situation in Cheyenne is escalating. To become this master, Campbell frees Snow and other criminals from prison, empowers them as marshals and uses them against Durant and his employees. The railway construction comes to a standstill after all leading positions are arrested for trivial matters or old profiles. The prisoners are to be sent eastward to various states by train. Cullen succeeds in stopping the prisoner transport and freeing and arming the inmates. Many of Campbell's men die in the shooting, but Snow escapes.

The liberated camp initially in the church. Snow blocks this from the outside and sets the building on fire. The men manage to free themselves, but the Mormon boy Ezra, who lives with Ruth, dies, who regards him as a beloved foster son. When Snow later tried to confront Bohannon in town, the desperate Ruth knocked him down with two shots and seriously wounded him. Although everyone would welcome Snow's death, Bohannon and Durant try to save his life so that Ruth is not hanged as a murderer. But Snow succumbs to his wounds and Ruth is sentenced to death. Campbell is aware of the moral dilemma and offers her a pardon. Ruth refuses this several times and, after confessing her love to Cullen, goes to her death voluntarily.

With the help of a steam excavator designed by Cullen, the construction team reached the summit of Mount Sherman and nothing stood in the way of a more rapid expansion of the route. However, due to the recent heavy stresses and to Durant's amazement, Cullen is leaving his job. He wants to concentrate on more important things and be with his wife and child. Naomi was unhappy for a long time because of the conditions in the village and because of Cullen's neglect. So she lived in Fort Smith again. Cullen makes his way to her, but finds only a few dead in the devastated fort and believes an Indian attack. In Salt Lake City , he hopes to find his family or clues to them. He learns that smallpox has raged in Fort Smith, but that his wife has traveled west.

Collis Huntington offers Cullen a job with the Central Pacific Railroad and help finding his family. Bohannon accepts.

Season 5

Cullen spent months searching for his wife and child until he lost track of them. He is now in charge of the construction of the Central Pacific, which is to develop the route from California and competes with the Union Pacific. The Central Pacific is now in Truckee . Huntington, who promised Bohannon help in finding his family, presented him with a telegram that they had apparently moved from one Mormon settlement to another, but were rejected everywhere as alleged apostates .

The Central Pacific mainly employs Chinese contract workers who have been recruited in China for this purpose. However, they suffer as wage slaves and from a lack of rights. The mediator Chang, formerly a Chinese rebel leader, is also responsible for this and is now hired by the railroad as a pimp and operator of an opium den . Despite his charming and cultivated appearance, he squeezes his own workers, suppresses their wages and lets uncomfortable foremen murdered. Also Tao, who fled China with his daughter Mei because of the Nian uprising and the rebels. In order not to end up as a whore in Chang's brothel, Mei pretends to be a man named Fong.

The Swede also works for the Central Pacific under Bohannon. Next to the Chinese, Mormons make up the second large group of workers. With his manipulative nature, however, the Swede exerts influence on Brigham Young's son Phineas, he should pull Mormons cheated out of their wages from work, as well as that he should be the true prophet and replace his father. This culminates in a failed attempt to assassinate his father in Salt Lake City, whereupon the Swede hastily flees to murder Bohannon's family. The whereabouts, a farm on the prairie, were known to him, as was Brigham Young, who initially withheld this information from Cullen in order to have some leverage to get Salt Lake City to be the terminus. When Cullen reaches the farm, the Swede has already murdered the patriarch Aaron Hatch and Naomi's sister. Naomi fled into the woods with Cullen's son. A duel between Cullen and Thor ends with the arrest of the Swede. Cullen refuses to kill him himself, he should be properly sentenced and hanged. Cullen was badly wounded by a shot in the thigh from the Swede, which leaves him limping. The Swede reproaches Cullen for not being that different, Cullen's life is also marked by a trace of murder. In addition, the railway is his obsession, for which he also abandons his wife and child. A flashback explains how Sweden was shaped. During the Civil War he was once a popular and cheerful quartermaster and musician in the Northern Army. However, the capture and imprisonment in the Andersonville prison camp severely traumatized him. Inhuman conditions, up to cannibalism, cruelty of the guards, created the "Swedes" first. Cullen and the Swede arrive at Fort Douglas, where he is convicted and hanged for his crimes. His last words were, “I'm Thor Gundersen from Norway.” Cullen recognizes the similarity between himself and his nemesis: both shaped by a war they were thrown into.

Gathering with his family turns out to be difficult for Cullen. Naomi now lives with a man, Isaac Vinson, who takes care of her and raises William like his own son. Although Cullen and Naomi still love each other, he realizes that he cannot offer his family the life they deserve. Since Isaac would be a good man, he therefore withdraws from their lives, but first causes them to be accepted back into the Mormon community under Brigham Young in Salt Lake City.

At Union Pacific, Durant notes with displeasure the progress the Central Pacific is making under the new construction manager, the “traitor,” Bohannon. He hires Mickey McGinnes to recruit Irish rail workers on the east coast. Including Johnny Shea, Mickey's cousin, a primitive, violent brute. Mickey now runs a saloon with a brothel, in which Eva works as a potty mom , but has problems keeping her hookers in check.

Durant is largely broke. In order to be able to meet the demands of farmers who feel cheated by their property purchases, he promised them a location at a railway junction, but relocated the route and plans a fake kidnapping of himself with Mickey and Shea. He would be indispensable for the railroad and the Union Pacific would pay the requested $ 250,000 ransom immediately, without going public or law enforcement, to prevent the stock price collapsing. However, Shea's attack on Durant's wagon does not go according to plan. Contrary to the agreement, he shoots the defensive, uninitiated engineer Durants and injures the reporter Louise Ellison. The Union Pacific also refuses to pay. Instead, she turns on the cavalry and Governor Campbell. Maggie Palmer, who by now had a love affair with Durant, sells her hotel in Cheyenne to buy Durant out of the proceeds of $ 50,000. At the handover, however, Shea is dissatisfied with the amount and shoots her, to Durant's desperation. Mickey feels compelled, like his brother before, to kill his unpredictable cousin as well. Campbell appears to have seen through Durant's game, but he lacks evidence. With Miss Palmer's money, Durant can at least appease the angry farmers.

The Central Pacific is struggling to break through the Sierra Nevada mountain range . Cullen therefore suggests nitroglycerin for tunneling , to the horror of the civil engineer Strobridge, who already had experience with this explosive and lost his left eye in the process. He refuses to work with nitroglycerin. In contrast to Bohannon, the most important thing in life is not the railroad, but his family, and he is fired for it. The operation costs several Chinese their lives, but this is how the rapid breakthrough succeeds.

A meeting under President Grant in Salt Lake City is to determine the further course of the railroad and its terminus. Contrary to Young's request, the Great Salt Lake to the north is to be bypassed, as both companies are seeking access to the coal fields of Ogden , Utah . Tired of the intrigues and brawls of both companies, Grant accepts Bohannon's suggestion that a race be held. The railroad company, which reaches Ogden first, is to receive the coal fields, as well as a prize money of 2.5 million dollars.

Cullen realizes that Fong is the young woman, Mei. A love relationship develops between the two, but it is thwarted by Chang, who also realizes this. Since she was a woman, he had contractual rights to let her work as a whore in his brothel. Since Cullen Chang previously refused to hold shares in the railroad, Chang refuses to terminate Mei's contract. Cullen puts her in the stagecoach to Cheyenne for her safety, but she is betrayed and sold by the coachwoman Mary Fields. In an argument in Washoe City, Nevada, Cullen therefore shoots Chang and his companion and takes Mei back to the platform. Although she previously confessed her love to him, she disappears back to China, leaving Cullen with only one message that is illegible to him.

Both companies have problems on the last miles of rail construction, as both Chinese and Irish have been poached to work as miners. Behind it is the "pirate", the one-eyed, eye-patch-wearing James Strobridge, as it turns out. Since the railroad is practically finished, he offers the workers a long-term perspective. Although the Union Pacific had a slight advantage, the Central Pacific can just barely get there first, also as Chinese workers returned to "finish their work," and some Black and Irish Union Pacific workers last defected to the Central Pacific they felt taken advantage of by Durant.

During the long railroad graduation celebrations, Cullen has a nervous breakdown over what the railroad cost him and what he lost. The next morning there is the solemn ceremony at which the “golden nail” is symbolically hammered in. Cullen turned down an offer from Huntington to help build the Pacific Railroad . Cullen questions the Chinese foreman about Mei's message. It is an address in China. Durant now sees himself charged with corruption, for which Cullen is called to Washington DC as a witness. There he speaks out for Durant. A flash forward to 1885 shows Durant dying in New York, impoverished and forgotten. Mickey travels to California to establish himself as a trader of exotic fruits in order to be able to finally escape the criminal Irish demi-world . Eva gives up her life in the brothel and rides towards sunset. Before that, she refused to let her life be processed literarily because she no longer wanted to prostitute herself. When speaking with President Grant, however, Cullen realizes that he was by no means necessary as a witness. Senators would have passed their verdict long ago. Grant offers Cullen a position as a Colonel in the Army. He should protect the railroad from bandits and robberies in the future. After a moment to think about it, Cullen agrees. However, a conversation with George Armstrong Custer opens his eyes. The President had said in a friendly manner that he was not employed to protect the railroad but to fight Indians. This fact, as well as the contemptuous language of Custer, made Bohannon reject his decision.

Cullen visits the church where he once shot a man in the confessional. The bullet hole is still visible. A priest asks him if he is looking for redemption. Cullen collapses, thanks the priest, and leaves the church. Bohannon travels east to west on the route he has built, with sections and locations bringing back memories. In San Francisco he embarks on a ship to China to meet Mei again.

production

Endemol was commissioned to develop the series at the end of 2008 . The development was carried out by Jeremy Gold , who is responsible for script-based series at Endemol . After two years in development at Endemol , AMC commissioned a pilot episode in May 2010 . Joe and Tony Gayton wrote the script for the pilot, David Von Ancken directed, and Jeremy Gold, Joe Gayton and Tony Gayton were executive producers . In July, Entertainment One was recruited as a production company. Part of this deal between the two companies is the determination of international distribution, with Endemol retaining the rights to the series in Europe while Entertainment One distributes it in all other territories. Furthermore, Entertainment One also holds the worldwide rights for DVD and Blu-ray sales, as well as video-on-demand and other digital playback options. The Canadian production company Nomadic Pictures has also been recruited and serves as a co-producer of the series alongside Entertainment One . The pilot was filmed in Calgary and central and southern Alberta between August and September 2010 . It was then submitted to AMC for review in November 2010 . Shortly thereafter, Deadline Hollywood reported that AMC was impressed by the series and that with the recent cancellation of the Rubicon drama series, the chances of a series order would be very good.

A month later, AMC ordered nine more episodes in addition to the pilot. Along with this appointment, it was announced that Nomadic Pictures would continue to co-produce the series, with Mike Frislev and Chad Oakes as producers, while John Shiban and David Von Ancken were hired as executive producers. Filming for the remaining nine episodes began in May 2011 and ended in September 2011, with locations in the Canadian province of Alberta also being selected as locations.

In July 2011, AMC announced November 6th of the same year as the start date of the series. In December 2011, the extension for a second season followed. At the end of October 2012, AMC announced the extension for a third season, the production of which began in 2013. Due to the unexpected exit of the new show runner John Shiban, the production of the third season was initially unsafe. On November 14, 2013, AMC announced the production of a fourth season that will consist of 13 episodes.

The casting for the series began in July 2010 with the occupation of Common , who took over the role of the recently freed slaves Elam Ferguson. Next up was Anson Mount and Dominique McElligott , with Mount starring Cullen Bohannon and McElligott playing Lily Bell, a newly widowed woman. In August 2010, Colm Meaney joined the cast as greedy entrepreneur Thomas "Doc" Durant, who takes full advantage of the changing times. Most recently, Eddie Spears was cast as Joseph Black Moon, an Indian who has to choose between the new world and the traditions of his ancestors, and Ben Esler and Phillip Burke as brothers Sean and Mickey McGinnes, who seek their fortune in the west. Jesse Lipscombe , Gerald Auger , Robert Moloney and Ted Levine have all been recruited as returning actors .

The historical template for the prostitute Eva is Olive Oatman . Eva's circumstances in the film have nothing to do with Olive Oatman, apart from the Indian kidnapping and her tattoo.
