The Walking Dead plays at the beginning mainly in the metropolitan area of Atlanta in the US state of Georgia and tells the story of a small band of survivors after a worldwide zombie - apocalypse . Under the leadership of Deputy Sheriff Rick Grimes, the group is looking for permanent and, above all, safe accommodation. The undead , which are present almost everywhere and are known within the group as biters or strays, represent a constant threat that can strike at any time without warning. As a result of various deaths, departures and newcomers, the size and constellation of the group change continuously. Over time, the more stable core of the group grows together emotionally and sees itself as a family network in which everyone is prepared to sacrifice their own life for that of the other if necessary. The search for a safe place leads the survivors through cities and forests overrun by zombies, over highways , to military installations and secret research facilities. The epidemic has raged everywhere the group has gone, turning almost everyone into zombies. On the way, the group meets other survivors, individually and in groups, who are partly peaceful, partly neutral, but also hostile. Towards the end of season five, the survivors arrive in the Washington, DC area

Due to their increasingly hopeless situation and the growing skepticism towards strangers, a noticeable mental change occurs in some members. Carol Peletier is an example of this change. While she seems fearful, shy and reserved in the first two seasons, over the course of events she develops into an ice cold and calculating fighter. This manifests itself in emotional numbness and a growing willingness to make hard-hearted decisions in favor of one's own survival (or that of the group). Daryl Dixon, who initially played the role of an outsider, not least due to the influence of his brother Merle, turns out to be a valuable and important decision maker for the group around Rick Grimes. The permanent zombie threat is, as in the comics, more in the background, because besides the non-stop "zombie splatter" there is also the actual plot. The focus is more on internal group differences and tensions as well as conflicts with outsiders. The most common points of contention among survivors are disagreements over how to proceed, basic beliefs and moral values , including issues such as suicide , cannibalism , abortion , “preventive killing” of infected and potentially dangerous prisoners, and racism . The focus is on the one hand on the question of how people change when their normal life is stolen from them and they suddenly have to fight for things that they took for granted. More and more it turns out that the real threat is not the zombies or the undead, but the survivors themselves, in the fight for the remaining resources. On the other hand, it is about the self-definition of people. For the first time in 30,000 years, confronted with a group of people who look similar to them, but do not belong to the same species or reproductive community, the apocalypse survivors wrestle with their idea and defense of what they want to call " human ". The author Wayne Yuen therefore discusses in the tense of the indicative future tense ("will it be ...?"):

“'The Walking Dead' is philosophically exciting because, unlike in a two-hour zombie film, we really find out what life is like in a world that is overrun with zombies. How should we behave towards one another? How should we divide the work? Without the support of the government, law enforcement officers and a set moral code, are we really all the same? Can we take what we want? Are there still private property? Will life really be 'bad, brutal and short' (Hobbes) or will it simply be different, with its own problems and troubles, coupled with troubles and triumphs? "

Frank Darabont (front) and Drew Struzan sign a limited edition poster from the series The Walking Dead .
Gale Anne Hurd (with star necklace) cast in The Walking Dead , 2012.

On January 20, 2010, AMC officially announced that it had commissioned a pilot episode of the comic book adaptation. Frank Darabont and Gale Anne Hurd were introduced as executive producers . Darabont also wrote the script and directed. The full series was pre-ordered based only on the quality of the comic, scripts, and Darabont's involvement. Filming for the pilot began on May 15, 2010 in Atlanta , Georgia and lasted 15 days after AMC commissioned a total of six episodes for the first season. Filming for the rest of the episodes, in which Darabont took on the role of the show runner , began on June 2nd. Make-up designer Gregory Nicotero is responsible for the masks and special effects for the series. On July 17, Darabont announced who would write and direct the six episodes of the first season. Darabont worked on the script for the first three episodes and directed the pilot. Michelle MacLaren directed the second episode. Charles H. Eglee , who also works as executive producer, and Jack LoGiudice wrote the screenplay with Darabont for the third episode, which was filmed by Gwyneth Horder-Payton . The fourth episode was written by Robert Kirkman, the comic book creator, and directed by Johan Renck . The screenplay for the fifth episode was written by Glen Mazzara and directed by Ernest R. Dickerson . The sixth and final episode was written by Adam Fierro and directed by Guy Ferland . The series was shot entirely with 16mm film . The producer Gregory Melton works as set director and on the CGI effects.

The sale of the international broadcasting rights was announced on June 14th. For Germany, FOX Channel secured the rights to the series. At the Cologne Conference on September 30, 2010, instead of the first episode announced first, only a ten-minute trailer was shown. On August 31, Darabont announced that The Walking Dead had been renewed for a second season, for which production will begin in February 2011. However, AMC stated that this is not yet the case. Producer Gale Anne Hurd later said that all future seasons will include 13 episodes. In the second season, Darabont would like to introduce the character of Michonne, which is very popular with fans of the comics, and show more of the environment of the second book.

On November 8th, after only two episodes broadcast, AMC announced the extension for a second season of 13 episodes. Production for the second season began on July 1, 2011. On July 13, 2011, during the premiere of the fourth season of Breaking Bad, a preview of the second season was shown. In July 2011, Frank Darabont resigned as showrunner from The Walking Dead . He is being replaced by Glen Mazzara .

Due to the increased ratings during the second season, AMC announced the production of a third season with a total of 16 episodes after two broadcast episodes.

In December 2012, due to the very high ratings of over 10 million viewers, the series was extended by a fourth season, which consists of 16 episodes. The broadcast of the fourth season began in October 2013. At the same time it was announced that the showrunner Glen Mazzara will leave the series due to artistic differences. Scott Gimple takes his place as showrunner. In late October 2013, the series was extended for a fifth season. One day before the start of the fifth season, AMC announced that it had ordered a sixth season of the series.

In mid-July 2017, a stuntman on set in the state of Georgia fell 10 m in a fight scene and later died of severe head injuries.

In October 2017, the series was extended by a ninth season, which aired between October 7, 2018 and March 31, 2019 in the United States and one day later in Germany.

In mid-January 2018 it was announced that Scott Gimple is stepping down as showrunner and Angela Kang will take over his post from the ninth season.

On February 4, 2019, it was announced that AMC would extend the series by a tenth season, which has been broadcast in Germany since October 6, 2019 and October 7, 2019. An 11th season has been ordered.

Lawsuits against AMC

In August 2017, producers Robert Kirkman , Gale Anne Hurd , Glen Mazzara , David Alpert and co-producing companies sued the media group AMC Networks , AMC Studios, the broadcaster AMC and other companies involved. The background to the lawsuit is that, in their opinion, AMC distributes the profits from the series in the group in such a way that the producers would be unfairly involved. Specifically, they say in their lawsuit that the AMC broadcaster pays insufficient license fees to the production company AMC Studios, which is also part of the group. In their lawsuit, they compare the amount of the license payments with those that the broadcaster AMC pays to external production companies, e.g. B. with the series Mad Men or Breaking Bad , which got higher license fees with less profit for the station.

In a lawsuit against AMC that has been ongoing for years and was brought by Frank Darabont , the showrunner of the series who had already been deposed after the first season in 2011 , a lawsuit worth 30 million US dollars per episode and additional money for the unpaid work that the production of the second season prepared. In total, he is demanding $ 280 million in compensation. If the lawsuit of the other producers succeeds in a similar amount, there is speculation of a lawsuit value of just under one billion US dollars.

marketing

Just before Comic-Con began, an animated comic ( motion comic ) of the first edition of the comic was posted on the AMC website, voiced by Phil LaMarr . A making-of , mainly about the first episode, as well as a number of background videos and interviews was also provided. In the documentary, the inventor of the comics and executive producer of the series Robert Kirkman and the cartoonist Charlie Adlard explain how close the television series is to the comic book and how much similarity the actors have with the drawings.

AMC ran the Spread the Dead marketing campaign , in which participants had to make as many people as possible aware of the series in order to win prizes.

One week before the broadcast, AMC, in cooperation with Fox International Channels, which own the rights to the international broadcast, had people dressed up and made up as zombies for advertising purposes in 26 cities around the world, including Munich, so that they could imitate a zombie invasion.

reception

Reviews

Nancy deWolf Smith of the Wall Street Journal wrote that the pilot was so good "that even a zombie hater like me would be addicted to it." She praised the fact that the series is very realistic and at the same time cinematic. Salon.com's Heather Havrilesky added The Walking Dead to her list of nine new TV series not to be missed in 2010, giving her the highest rating with an "A". The first and third seasons of the series have an 82% metascore on Metacritic , based on 25 and 19 reviews, respectively.

"The television adaptation is surprisingly scary and remarkably good, a show that visually echoes the stylized comic-book aesthetic of the original and combines elegant suspense with gratifyingly crude and gruesome slasher-film gore."

- Alessandra Stanley : The New York Times

Dead is beautifully shot, but what it's shooting are former humans with rotting skin and bleating agonized groans. And like the comics, there's great, grim humor. "

Dead is beautifully filmed, but what is filmed are former people with rotten skin and bleating, tortured moans. And like in the comics, there is great, dark humor. "

- Ken Tucker : Entertainment Weekly

“Writer and director Frank Darabont ('The Shawshank Redemption,' 'The Green Mile') seamlessly stitches together grand American traditions including the western, the separated-family drama and, of course, the post-apocalypse tale, creating the first zombie epic , with sprawling storylines, archetypal characters and imagery to rival 'Gone With the Wind'. "

He creates the first zombie epic with extensive storylines, archetypal characters and imagery that vie with Gone with the Wind . "

- Mary McNamara : Los Angeles Times

“The series contains classic western and group psychological elements. It is a family drama, love story, end-time fairy tale and horror thriller in one. "

The German version is therefore identical to the European version. The US version was the only uncut version to be released on DVD. The second season, on the other hand, was distributed completely uncensored: However, some scenes are missing in two episodes that can only be seen on TV and are not included on the US DVD / Blu-ray. On March 4, 2013, the Voluntary Self-Control of the Film Industry (FSK) announced in its online database that the fourth and fifth episodes of the first season had been re-examined. These received full approval from the age of 18. On May 31, 2013 a special uncut version was released on DVD and Blu-ray, which contains episodes 2 to 5 in full. There was also a special edition for the third season. This includes a model of the governor's aquarium.
