Hendrik Pekeler (born July 2, 1991 in Itzehoe ) is a German handball player who has been playing at THW Kiel since the 2018/19 season . The 2.03 m tall Pekeler is a cyclist .
Career
society
Hendrik Pekeler began playing handball in 2002 at ETSV Fortuna Glückstadt. In 2004 he moved to MTV Herzhorn and in 2007 to regional league team Bramstedter TS . In 2008 he received a four-year contract with THW Kiel . In the 2008/09 season, however, he had the first game right at the second division TSV Altenholz . From summer 2009, Pekeler played for the Bundesliga team and for the second team of the THW Kiel, which played in the regional league . In summer 2010 he announced his move to Bergischer HC . He signed a two-year contract there. In 2011 he was promoted to the Bundesliga with BHC. From the 2012/13 season, Pekeler played for TBV Lemgo, with whom he signed a three-year contract. In the 2013/14 season , Pekeler was the league's most dangerous runner with 125 field goals. In July 2014 it was announced that he would leave Lemgo after the 2014/15 season and join the Rhein-Neckar Löwen as the successor to Bjarte Myrhol . In summer 2018 he returned to THW Kiel.
National team
Pekeler played for the German national youth team, with whom he finished fourth at the 2010 European Championships in Slovakia. On March 14, 2012 he made his debut in the German national team . At the European Championships in Poland in 2016 , he became European champions with the German team with a 24:17 victory over Spain . He won the bronze medal at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro . For this he was awarded the silver bay leaf on November 1, 2016 . At the 2019 World Cup in Germany and Denmark, he finished fourth with the national team. At the 2020 European Championships , Germany finished fifth and Pekeler was voted the best defender. He has played 109 games so far, in which he scored 179 goals.
Private
Pekeler interrupted his bank clerk apprenticeship in order to complete basic training in the German armed forces in January / February 2010 . He was then accepted into the sports promotion group in Warendorf , which was trained by Martin Heuberger . Heuberger was also the junior national coach of Pekeler.
