Horton Smith

Horton Smith (born May 22, 1908 in Springfield , Missouri , † October 15, 1963 in Detroit , Michigan ) was an American professional golfer .

Smith turned pro at the age of 18 and won his first tournament two years later. In his strongest year, 1929, he won the PGA TOUR , eight of 22 tournaments and was runner-up six times. Between 1929 and 1937 he played for the USA five times in the Ryder Cup and was not defeated in any game. Smith was President of the PGA of America from 1952 to 1954 and was elected to its Hall of Fame in 1958. He died of Hodgkin's disease in 1963 .
