Hubert Stevens

John Hubert Stevens (born March 7, 1890 in Lake Placid , New York , † November 26, 1950 there ) was an American bobsledder and Olympic champion .

After graduating from the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy , Stevens worked as an engineer . During the First World War he was a machinist and pilot in the Aviation Section of the US Army Signal Corps , from which today's United States Air Force emerged . After the war ended, he ran the family-owned hotel in Lake Placid and was responsible for safety in the Whiteface Mountain ski area .

Stevens was a versatile athlete. He played golf and ice hockey . Most successful, however, he was as a bobsleigh driver and won three North American and three American championship titles. He took part in the 1932 Winter Olympics in his hometown and won the gold medal in the two-man bobsleigh with his brother Curtis Stevens . Another brother, Paul Stevens , came second in the four-man bobsleigh. Four years later he reached fourth place in the four-man bobsleigh in Garmisch-Partenkirchen .
