history

Place name

The village was first mentioned in 1144 as Emundrode. In 1530 the place name developed to Emenrait and in 1666 to Emeradt. From the end of the 17th century, the spelling Immerath was preferred.

The name is made up of the personal name Aiwismund ( aiwi - in Middle High German ewe - means law, the Old High German munt guardian) and the basic word reod . The place was therefore a clearing of the Aiwismund or Edmund. Settlements from the clearing period were founded in the Erkelenzer Land mainly in the 9th to 11th centuries.

With the relocation to the current location, the addition “(new)” was added after the place names in order to distinguish the old place from the new one.

Settlement history

The village of Neu-Immerath is being built on a 35-hectare site south of Erkelenz. The groundbreaking ceremony took place on January 20, 2006. From July 2006 the first building plots were available. Around 700 residents from Immerath , Lützerath and Pesch (66 percent of the total population) are taking part in the resettlement. The pure construction area covers 18 hectares and offers 270 plots for 300 households. The public green spaces are 5.7 hectares and the roads and utilities 7.7 hectares. The urban space requirement for the community center, kindergarten and gymnasium is 0.7 hectares. The planning of the new residential area is based on the old street layout. At the request of the Aachen diocese, the originally planned reconstruction of the double-towered “cathedral” was waived. The resettlement was officially completed in April 2017, even if people were still living in the old place at that time.

The groundbreaking ceremony was on September 13, 2013 and the foundation stone was laid with the topping-out ceremony on April 12, 2014. The chapel has a bell tower attached to the side of the nave, in which four of the six old Immerath bells will ring again. The chancel was designed by the artist Karl-Heinz Laufs. The consecration of the small church took place on March 28, 2015. The consecration was carried out by the Aachen auxiliary bishop Karl Borsch .

"Kaisersaal" with kindergarten

The (old) "Kaisersaal" has served the Immerath clubs as an event location since the beginning of the 20th century. The exact date of construction is unknown. In 1906 the building was first referred to as the "Imperial Hall". The building was badly damaged during the Second World War and was used as a warehouse in the following years. In 1966 the municipality bought the building at the request of the mayor of Immerath, Johann Corsten, in order to convert it into a modern event hall with the active support of the people of Immerath.

On September 20, 2010 the foundation stone for the new “Kaisersaal” was laid. The opening took place on January 13, 2012.
