Iceland's Footballer of the Year

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Iceland's Footballer of the Year ( Icelandic Knattspyrnumaður ársins ) is an Icelandic football award given to the best Icelandic player.

history

The title was first awarded in 1973 to Guðni Kjartansson . Initially, the award could be given to both male and female players. In 1994, Ásta Breiðfjörð Gunnlaugsdóttir was the first and only time a woman was awarded the title. From 1997 there was a separate award for female football players , Knattspyrnukona ársins ( Iceland's female footballer of the year ).

In 1989, a player who was active abroad won the award for the first time, namely Ólafur Þórðarson , who is playing at Brann Bergen in Norway . Since 1997, the title has not been awarded to players from the Icelandic league.

In 2004 the voting mode was changed. By then, the Icelandic Football Association had determined the players to be awarded. Since 2004, the best player has been chosen by a committee made up of officials, coaches and former players.
