Jaana Maarit Savolainen (born January 23, 1964 in Lappeenranta ) is a former Finnish cross-country skier .

Career

Savolainen, who started for the Lahden Hiihtoseura , had her first international success at the Junior World Ski Championships in 1982 in Murau . There she won the silver medal with the relay. The following year she won the relay gold medal at the Junior World Ski Championships in Kuopio . She made her debut in the World Cup in March 1983 in Lahti and finished 44th over 5 km. In February 1984, she took second place in the relay in Falun . At the Nordic World Ski Championships in 1985 in Seefeld in Tirol , she was fourth in the relay. At the beginning of the 1985/86 season she reached her first podium in the World Cup singles in Labrador City with third place over 5 km freestyle. In the further course of the season she achieved third place with the relay in Lahti and won her first World Cup victory in Oslo over 10 km freestyle. She finished the season in eighth place in the overall World Cup. The following year she finished sixth with the relay at the Nordic World Ski Championships in 1987 in Oberstdorf and third with the relay at the World Cup in Lahti. At the beginning of the 1987/88 season she came in La Clusaz with second place over 5 km freestyle again on the podium. At the season highlight, the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary , she won the bronze medal with the relay. In addition, she achieved 28th place in the 20 km freestyle. At the Nordic World Ski Championships in Lahti in 1989 , she won the gold medal with the relay and achieved 16th place over 10 km freestyle. In the 1989/90 season she came in the top ten three times in the World Cup. She clinched her second World Cup victory in Soldier Hollow over 5 km and finished ninth in the overall World Cup at the end of the season. In March 1991, she finished third in the relay in Falun. In the 1991/92 season she reached three top ten positions in the individual World Cup and thus achieved 13th place in the overall World Cup. Her best results at the 1992 Winter Olympics in Albertville were 18th in the pursuit and fourth in the relay. She ran her last World Cup race in March 1994 in Lahti, which she finished in fourth place in the relay.
