Marjo Tuulevi Matikainen-Kallström (born February 3, 1965 in Lohja ) is a former Finnish cross-country skier . Today she works as a politician.

Sports

At the Junior World Championships in 1983 Matikainen won the gold medal with the Finnish 3x5 kilometer relay. One of her greatest successes was her Olympic victory in the 5 kilometer race in Calgary in 1988. There she also won bronze medals over 10 kilometers and with the Finnish relay. With the relay she won bronze at the Olympic Games in Sarajevo in 1984 .

At the Nordic World Ski Championships in 1987 in Oberstdorf , she became world champion over 5 kilometers and vice world champion over 10 kilometers. Both distances were run in the classic style at the time. Two years later in Lahti she became world champion over 15 kilometers in the classic style and in the 4x5 km relay as well as vice world champion over 10 kilometers in free style . She was also able to win two bronze medals: in the race over 10 km in classic style and in the race over 30 km in freestyle.

In the cross-country world cup , Matikainen-Kallström won seven races. In 1986, 1987 and 1988 she won the overall World Cup ranking.

In 1986 she became the Finnish triathlon champion before Joan Guetschow .

Profession and Politics

After her sporting career, which she ended at the age of 24, she first devoted herself to studying engineering at the Helsinki University of Technology . After graduating in 1992, she worked in this profession for several years.

Marjo Matikainen-Kallström was a member of the European Parliament from 1996 to 2004 , she belonged to the Group of the European People's Party . She has been a member of the Finnish Parliament since 2003 and is also vice-chairman of Kokoomus , the liberal-conservative party in Finland. Since 2000 she has been a member of the Presidium of the Finnish Olympic Committee.
