Stefania Belmondo (born January 13, 1969 in Vinadio ) is a former Italian cross-country skier . She is one of the most successful athletes of the 1990s and was one of the first to break the dominance of the Russians and Scandinavians. She won a total of 23 medals at the Olympic Games and World Championships. With 10 Olympic medals, she holds the record at the Winter Games (women) with Raissa Smetanina and Marit Bjørgen .

biography

Belmondo first took part in world championships in 1987 and started in 1988 for the first time at the Olympic Games. At the Junior World Championships in 1988 in Saalfelden am Steinernen Meer, Austria, she won bronze over 5 kilometers and with the Italian relay. The following year she was junior world champion over five and 15 kilometers at the 1990 Junior World Championships in Vang, Norway . In 1989 she won her first world cup race . She won her first two medals at the 1991 World Championships. At the 1992 Winter Olympics , she was Olympic champion over 30 km. She celebrated two more victories, in the pursuit race and over 30 kilometers, at the 1993 World Championships. A broken toe that had to be operated on forced her to take a four-month break from competition.

After a second operation, Belmondo took part in the 1994 Olympic Games, but failed to meet expectations with two bronze medals. Contrary to the advice of her doctors, she decided to continue her sports career. At the 1997 World Cup she came second four times, always behind her Russian competitor Jelena Välbe . Belmondo won a silver and a bronze medal at the Olympics. The third place with the relay is remarkable because last runner Belmondo started the track in ninth place and still overtook runners. Also in 1997 Belmondo was honored with the Holmenkollen Medal .

At the 1999 World Championships, Belmondo won two more gold medals, in the pursuit race and over 15 km. In addition, in the 1998/99 season she was the first female runner from an Alpine country to win the overall ranking of the cross-country skiing world cup. In 2002, at her fifth Olympic Games, she won the 15 km race. After the 2001/2002 season, she ended her cross-country skiing career.

On 10 February 2006 ignited Belmondo during the opening ceremony of the Winter Olympics in Turin , the Olympic flame .
