Therese Johaug (born June 25, 1988 in Røros ) is a Norwegian cross-country skier . By winning the bronze medal at the Nordic World Ski Championships in 2007 , she became the youngest world championship medalist in cross-country skiing. At the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver , she was able to win the gold medal with the relay. At the Nordic World Ski Championships in Oslo in 2011 , she repeated the success with the relay and also won her first individual gold. At the 2013 World Championships in Val di Fiemme , she won the gold medal over 10 kilometers freestyle ahead of Marit Bjørgen ; In 2015 she became world champion in Falun in the skiathlon and in the 30 km race in classic style and again with the relay. In the 2013/14 season she won the overall World Cup. She succeeded again in the 2015/16 season.
After a positive doping control for the steroid Clostebol , Johaug was banned for 18 months beginning in October 2016.

Career

Johaug started international races at the end of November 2005. She was able to occupy first places in the FIS races and from 2006 also in the Scandinavian Cup in almost all races in which she competed. She won two of the FIS races and one race of the Scandinavian Cup. In January 2007 she appeared for the first time at the Norwegian Championships, which took place in the Grova Skisenter in Meråker . After she had already finished fifth over 10 km in freestyle, she won bronze in the double pursuit on January 20, 2007 behind Marit Bjørgen and Kristin Størmer Steira . Although the then 18-year-old was still too young for the World Cup , a week later she was used on a trial basis at the World Cup in Otepää . In her debut race over 10 km in the classic technique, she was able to take eighth place straight away. At two other World Cups in Davos at the beginning of February , she narrowly missed the points, but was nevertheless appointed to the Norwegian team for the Nordic World Ski Championships 2007 in Sapporo . Contrary to the presumptions of the press, it was not used in the relay, but in the mass start race over 30 km in the classic technique. In this race, her first over the long distance on an international level, she won the bronze medal behind Virpi Kuitunen and Steira. This success made her the youngest medalist in cross-country skiing at the Nordic World Ski Championships. At the subsequent Junior World Championships in Tarvisio , she won bronze in the pursuit and was fourth over 5 km. At the end of the season Johaug reached a podium in the World Cup as third in the double pursuit in Falun and won the Norwegian Championship over 30 km in Nybygda . In April 2007 she won the Skarverennet for the first time over 38 km freestyle from Finse to Ustaoset .

At the beginning of the 2007/08 winter, Johaug was able to recommend himself to the Norwegian 2007/08 World Cup team at the preseason races in Beitostølen and a week later celebrated their first World Cup victory with the relay at the same place. Two weeks later she won another race with the relay in Davos. In the individual races in the first section of the season, she occupied places in the front part of the field. At the turn of the year she took part in the Tour de Ski . In the fifth stage in Nové Město , she was able to get third place, in the overall Tour ranking she was fourteenth. Johaug did not take part in the subsequent World Cup in Canmore , Canada , and just missed the podium at the following Norwegian championship in Trondheim . After further World Cup starts, in which she achieved another podium finish with third place in Ötepää, she took part in the Junior World Championships in Males, Italy. Here, although she had traveled sick, she was able to win the gold medal in all three races in which she started (5 km classic, 10 km freestyle and the relay together with Celine Brun-Lie , Ingvild Flugstad Østberg and Marthe Kristoffersen ). After the Junior World Championships she finished fourth in the 30 km race on Holmenkollen at the beginning of March , but she only managed to place in midfield at the 2007/2008 World Cup final in Bormio . In April 2008 she won the Skarverennet as in the previous year.

In the summer of 2008 she finished her education at a secondary school in Tynset and began studying at Trondheim University . Since she no longer had a connection there with the sports club Tynset IF , for which she had started up until then, she changed clubs and started for the club Nansen IL from her home village Dalsbygda in the municipality of Os. Johaug came into the focus of the Norwegian media at the beginning of November 2008 when a video was initially posted on the Internet platform YouTube , which was shortly afterwards broadcast on the website of the online newspaper Nettavisen and on the pages of the tabloids VG and Dagbladet . The video recorded by Astrid Jacobsen during a training camp in Schnalstal shows Kristin Størmer Steira , Ingri Aunet Tyldum and Johaug dancing in the woods in gymnastic clothing and sports underwear to the song Skiippagurra Babylon , a Rivers of Babylon cover by the Banana Airlines group . Johaug had the idea to shoot the video. At the beginning of the video, the athletes explain that they are depicting Russian prostitutes who are on their way to the Skiippagurra festival in Skiippagurra in Tana . This earned the video the name Horevideo (whore video) in the media . The video, which the athletes thought of as fun, was criticized in the following days by the organizers of the festival and by a women's organization and described as stigmatizing, whereupon a debate about the video erupted in the media.

At the season opening races of the Norwegian team in Beitostølen, which took place just a few days after the video scandal, Johaug presented himself in good form and was able to achieve a podium place in both races. At the World Cup races in November and December 2008, she was always able to occupy front positions and win a race with the relay. After starting the Tour de Ski with results in the top midfield , she was able to improve to the end and win the final mountain stage, which brought her sixth place in the tour standings. At the subsequent Norwegian Championships in Gjøvik , she was able to win the silver medal in the double pursuit. At the World Cups in Otepää and Valdidentro at the end of January , she finished fifth and 17th. Then she took part in the Nordic World Ski Championships in Liberec in 2009 , where she remained with two fourth places without a medal. At the following World Cup races in Lahti and Trondheim , she finished in the top ten in the distance races, but missed qualification in the sprint. At the World Cup finals in 2009 she was able to qualify for the sprint in Stockholm , but was last in the classification race. After a 15th place in the prologue, she was able to take second place in both distance races in Falun and thus also came second in the overall ranking of the final. In the overall World Cup, she achieved her best result so far in eighth place. At the Norwegian championship over 30 km taking place after the end of the season in Røros , she won another gold medal. In April 2009 she won again at the Skarverennet.

In the summer of 2009, Johaug also started a roller ski World Cup race in Kristiansund , but ended up in last place. In the first section of the World Cup winter 2009/2010 Johaug was able to consistently achieve the points. At the turn of the year she also took part in the Tour de Ski 2009/2010 , but broke off the tour from the seventh stage. During the following weeks she prepared for the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver and did not take part in any more World Cup races.

2010 Winter Olympics

At the Olympics, she first took sixth place in the double pursuit. On February 25, 2010 she was finally able to win the gold medal in the 4 × 5 km relay together with Vibeke Skofterud , Kristin Størmer Steira and Marit Bjørgen. At the end of the Games, she was sieves in the 30 km classic race. At the end of the season, she was able to take third place in two World Cup races in Lahti and Oslo and celebrate another victory in the relay race in Lahti. As a result, she also took part in several sprint and short-distance races, in which, as a distance specialist, she achieved only mediocre results. In the distance races of the World Cup finals in Falun, however, she consistently made it into the top ten. At the end of the season she won the silver medal at the Norwegian Championship in Tolga over 30 km classic. In April 2010 she won the 38 km freestyle at the Skarverennet for the fourth time in a row.

The Tour de Ski 2010/11 finished Johaug in second place in the overall standings, where she again won the final mountain stage. At the Nordic World Ski Championships 2011 in Oslo , she achieved bronze in the pursuit race and gold in the mass start race over 30 km in free technique. She was the only starter who managed to defeat Marit Bjørgen in these world championships. She was also a member of the victorious Norwegian 4 × 5 km relay. A week after winning her first world title in an individual race, she also achieved her first individual victory in a World Cup race by taking first place in the ten kilometer double pursuit in Lahti. When the World Cup finals she placed on the space 31 in the sprint stage three third places and also took third place in the overall standings. She came fourth in the overall World Cup and third in the Distance World Cup. In April 2011 she won again at the Skarverennet.

At the beginning of the 2011/12 season , Johaug was able to win a stage of the Nordic Opening and came second in the overall standings. In Davos, she finished third in the 15 km freestyle race for the first time of the season. She also came second on the podium in the mass start in Rogla , Slovenia , the following World Cup station. Johaug achieved third place overall at the Tour de Ski 2011/12 . She was on the podium in four stages, among other things she was again the fastest on the final mountain pursuit. In Otepää, she was third again on the podium before winning her second and third World Cup races in the Russian Rybinsk and Lahti with the double pursuit. In the overall World Cup of the season, Johaug took third place for the first time in the overall standings. In April 2012 she won the 38 km freestyle at the Skarverennet for the sixth time in a row.

The 2012/13 season was the most successful so far for Therese Johaug. In the 2012/13 season ranking of the World Cup , she finished second in the overall and distance World Cup for the first time. She also achieved second place overall in the 2012/13 Tour de Ski and was again fastest in the final mountain stage. At the Nordic World Ski Championships in 2013 in Val di Fiemme , Italy , in addition to winning the title again with the Norwegian relay team, she also won a gold, silver and bronze medal in the individual distance races. This enabled Johaug to win a medal in all competitions that she competed in at this world championship. In the Skarverennet she came in third place.

In the 2013/14 Cross-Country World Cup , Johaug won the overall ranking for the first time. She was also able to win the ranking of the Distance World Cup for the first time. She created the basis for these successes above all with winning the Tour de Ski 2013/14 , the first overall success of a Norwegian runner in this stage race. She also won two individual stages, including again - for the fifth time and for the fourth time in a row - the final mountain stage. She also won the overall ranking of the World Cup finals, securing her overall World Cup victory over Marit Bjørgen.

2014 Winter Olympics

At the highlight of the season, the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi , Johaug did not win, but was able to win her first two individual Olympic medals with silver over 30 km in free technique and bronze over 10 km classic. At the end of the season she won the Skarverennet.

In the 2014/15 World Cup season , Therese Johaug took second place in the overall and distance World Cups behind Marit Bjørgen, who dominated again this time, as well as in the overall ranking of the Tour de Ski , in which she completed the last two stages - including the mountain stage again - could win. At the Nordic World Ski Championships in Falun in 2015 , Johaug was the most successful cross-country skier with three gold medals in four starts - she was world champion in skiathlon, over 30 km in classic technique and with the Norwegian relay. In March 2015 she won the Birkebeinerrennet . The following month she won the Skarverennet for the eighth time.

In the 2015/16 Cross-Country World Cup , including World Cup stages , she won 16 victories, including 14 individual victories, and took second place four times and third place once. She also won the Nordic Opening , the Tour de Ski 2016 , in which she once again overtook Ingvild Flugstad Østberg , who had been leading up until then, with the fastest time on the final mountain stage , and the Ski Tour Canada , which was held for the first time . With that she won all multi-stage competitions of the World Cup season and for the second time the overall and the distance World Cup. At the Norwegian Championships in 2016 in Beitostølen , she won the 5 km freestyle and 30 km freestyle. In April 2016 she won the Skarverennet for the ninth time.

Doping ban 2016

On October 13, 2016 it was announced that a doping test carried out at Johaug on September 16, 2016 had yielded a positive result for the androgenic steroid Clostebol . According to the Norwegian Ski Association, this is said to be due to the treatment of a sunburn on her lip with the cream Trofodermin during a training camp in Livigno . Johaug received this cream from team doctor Fredrik S. Bendiksen, who bought it at a local pharmacy. The doctor took responsibility and explained that he was not aware that the cream contained Clostebol, even though the preparation had a doping warning label. According to Johaug's lawyer, the athlete overlooked the warning on the packaging. On October 19, 2016, Johaug was temporarily suspended for two months by the Norwegian Anti-Doping Agency. In February 2017, she was banned from the Norwegian Sports Confederation's court of arbitration for 13 months. The ban applied retrospectively from October 18, 2016. In August 2017, the ban was extended to 18 months by the International Court of Justice , thus preventing their participation in the 2018 Winter Olympics . Johaug has been eligible to start again since April 18, 2018.

Comeback since 2018

After her suspension expired, she started again in the World Cup in Ruka at the beginning of the 2018/19 season , where she won the classic 10 km race. She also won the following Lillehammer Tour with two victories. In the further course of the season she won six World Cup singles and two World Cup victories with the relay. At the end of January 2019 she became Norwegian champion over 10 km classic and skiathlon in Meråker . At the World Championships in Seefeld in Tyrol , Austria , in February 2019, she prevailed in the skiathlon in 36: 54.5 minutes with 57.6 seconds ahead of her compatriot Ingvild Flugstad Østberg . She also became world champion in the 30 km mass start race and the 10 km route in classic style, this time ahead of Frida Karlsson from Sweden and again Ingvild Flugstad Østberg, who this time came third. With the relay, she won the silver medal there. At the World Cup finals in Québec , she ran second place in the 10 km mass start race and first place in the pursuit, and finally achieved third place in the overall World Cup and first place in the Distance World Cup. At the end of March 2019 she won first place at the Norwegian Championships in Lygna over 5 km freestyle and over 30 km classic. In the 2019/20 season she won 20 individual World Cup victories. She won the Ruka Triple, the Tour de Ski 2019/20 and the Skitour 2020 and also got two victories in the relay and came second twice. It was the third time that she won the overall World Cup and the fourth time the Distance World Cup. At the Norwegian Championships in Konnerud in 2020 , she triumphed over 10 km and 15 km.

On August 4, 2019, she won the 10,000 meter run at the Norwegian Athletics Championships with a championship record after 32: 20.86 minutes. This also met the qualification standard for the European Athletics Championships 2020 in Paris , which were ultimately canceled due to the Covid 19 pandemic .

On June 11, 2020, Johaug started the Bislett Games in the Diamond League program, which was held as the "Impossible Games" due to the Covid 19 pandemic, in the 10,000 meter run and increased her personal best to 31: 40.67 minutes.
