Jacob Hart Ela (born July 18, 1820 in Rochester , New Hampshire , † August 21, 1884 in Washington, DC ) was an American politician . Between 1867 and 1871 he represented the state of New Hampshire in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Jacob Ela attended elementary school in his native Rochester. He later did an apprenticeship in a wool factory and then went into the printing trade. Politically, Ela joined the Republican Party founded in 1854 . Between 1857 and 1858 he was an MP in the New Hampshire House of Representatives . Between July 1861 and October 1866 he was US Marshal for the District of New Hampshire .

In 1866 Ela was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington in the first district of New Hampshire, where he succeeded Gilman Marston on March 4, 1867 . After a re-election in 1868, he was able to complete two terms in Congress until March 3, 1871 . From 1869 he was chairman of the Ministry of Interior's expenditure control committee . His first term in Congress (1867–1869) was overshadowed by the dispute between his party and President Andrew Johnson , which culminated in the narrowly failed impeachment proceedings against the president. During Ela's time in Congress, the 14th and 15th amendments were discussed and ratified there. It was about the civil rights and the right to vote of the former Afro-American slaves.

After the end of his time in Congress Jacob Elah of President Ulysses S. Grant to the auditor ( auditor ) of the Ministry of Finance appointed. He held this office between January 1, 1872 and June 2, 1881. He then took on the same position for the Ministry of Post and carried it out in the federal capital until his death on August 21, 1884. Jacob Ela was buried in his native Rochester.
