Peter Carleton

Peter Carleton (born September 19, 1755 in Haverhill , Essex County , Province of Massachusetts Bay , † April 29, 1828 in Landaff , New Hampshire ) was an American politician . Between 1807 and 1809 he represented the state of New Hampshire in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Peter Carleton attended public schools in his home country and then worked in agriculture. During the Revolutionary War he was a soldier in a regiment from Massachusetts. Around 1789 Carleton moved to Landaff, New Hampshire. In his new home state, he was a delegate to a meeting to revise the state constitution in 1790.

Carleton was a member of the Democratic Republican Party founded by Thomas Jefferson . In 1803 and 1804 he was a member of the New Hampshire House of Representatives , from 1806 to 1807 he was a member of the State Senate . In the 1806 congressional elections, held nationwide, Carleton was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC for the first New Hampshire congress. There he took over from Silas Betton of the Federalist Party on March 4, 1807 . By March 3, 1809, he completed a term in Congress .

After the end of his time in Congress, Peter Carleton was no longer politically active. He died in Landaff in April 1828 and was buried there.
