Samuel Tenney

Samuel Tenney (born November 27, 1748 in Byfield , Essex County , Province of Massachusetts Bay , † February 6, 1816 in Exeter , New Hampshire ) was an American politician . From 1800 to 1807 he represented the state of New Hampshire in the US House of Representatives .

Life

Samuel Tenney attended Dummer Academy in Byfield, his birthplace. He then studied at Harvard College , now Harvard University, until 1772 . For some time he was a teacher in Andover . After studying medicine, he began practicing medicine in Exeter. During the Revolutionary War , Tenney was a military doctor. After the end of the war he returned to Exeter, where he again worked as a doctor. In 1791 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .

Tenney was also active in politics. In 1788 he was a delegate to a meeting to revise the New Hampshire constitution. He became a member of the Federalist Party founded by Alexander Hamilton . From 1793 to 1800 he was a probate judge in Rockingham County . After the resignation of Congressman William Gordon , he won the due by-election, which was held nationwide, and took New Hampshire's third mandate from December 8, 1800. After he was confirmed in each of the three subsequent regular elections, he could remain in Congress until March 3, 1807 . From 1805 he held the fourth seat of parliament in his state. Tenney was chairman of the Committee on Revisal and Unfinished Business from 1803 to 1807 . During his tenure in Congress, the Louisiana Purchase made by President Thomas Jefferson in 1803 significantly expanded United States territory to the west. In addition, the 12th amendment to the constitution was passed in 1804 , which reorganized the election of the president and vice-president.

After serving in the House of Representatives, Tenney returned to Exeter. There he dealt with historical studies and research. He has written numerous articles on this subject, also with the help of his wife Tabitha Gilman. Samuel Tenney died on February 6, 1816 in Exeter and was buried there.
