William B. Small

William Bradbury Small (born May 17, 1817 in Limington , York County , Massachusetts , †  April 7, 1878 in Newmarket , New Hampshire ) was an American politician . Between 1873 and 1875 he represented the state of New Hampshire in the US House of Representatives .

Career

William Small, born in what is now Maine , moved with his parents to Ossipee , New Hampshire, as a child . There he attended public schools. He then graduated from the Phillips Exeter Academy in Exeter . After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1846, Small began practicing his new profession in Newmarket. He also served as a district attorney in Rockingham County at times .

Small became a member of the Republican Party . He was elected to the New Hampshire House of Representatives in 1865 and to the State Senate in 1870 . In the congressional elections of 1872 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the first district of New Hampshire , where he succeeded Democrat Ellery Albee Hibbard on March 4, 1873 . Since he refused to run again in 1874, Small could only hold one term in Congress until March 3, 1875 .

After his tenure in the House of Representatives, Small returned to working as a lawyer and engaged in banking. He died in Newmarket on April 7, 1878.
