Jiří Magál (born April 11, 1977 in Chrudim ) is a Czech cross-country skier . He lives in Krnov and starts for TJ Dukla Liberec .

Career

Magál made his international debut in late December 1995 in lower class races. In 1996 in Asiago and 1997 in Canmore he took part in the Junior World Championships, each with fourth place over 30 kilometers as the best result. In December 1997 he was allowed to compete in the cross-country world cup in Val di Fiemme for the first time and was 101st over 15 kilometers. In his second outing in January of the following year, he won the first World Cup points as 25th in the 30 kilometer race. With this and with several good results before and after that in FIS races , he qualified for the 1998 Olympic Games in Nagano Here Magál started over 30 (22nd) and 50 kilometers (47th).

Even after that, Magál initially started in lower-class races and only sporadically in the World Cup. In 1999 he took part in a Nordic World Ski Championships in Ramsau for the first time , but did not achieve any successes worth mentioning. Since then he has participated in all World Championships. In 2002 he took part in the Olympic Games for the second time in Salt Lake City . The best result was seventh place with the relay. Since that Olympic season, Magál has mostly competed in World Cup races. In February 2004 he came sixth over 15 kilometers in La Clusaz for the first time in the top ten. The best place was a fifth place in November 2005 in a 15-kilometer race in Kuusamo .

In 2006 and 2007 he won the hill climb as part of an annual sporting relay event in Lienz and can now call himself a two-time Dolomitenmann . At the Tour de Ski 2006/07 he achieved his best overall result to date with 13th place in the overall Tour ranking. The best individual result was a ninth place in the 30 km stage in Cavalese . At the subsequent World Cup over 15 km from Davos he finished eighth and also got a starting place for the following relay. With this he just missed a podium place in fourth. At the Nordic World Ski Championships in Sapporo in 2007 he stayed 15th over 30 km and 29th over 15 km and eighth in the relay without a medal. At the World Cup in Falun he celebrated another top 10 place with ninth place. As a result, however, Magál had to fight clearly with his performance in the individual World Cups.

He broke off the 2007/08 Tour de Ski prematurely and was therefore not included in the overall standings. At the Czech Championships in Horní Mísečky in 2008 Magál celebrated victory over the 15 km individual distance in classic style. In the 2008/09 season he initially stayed outside of the points. Therefore, after finishing 36th in the Tour de Ski 2008/09 , he also started two races in the Slavic Cup in January. Magál won both races in Liberec . Back in the World Cup he was 29th again in the points in Otepää .

At the Nordic World Ski Championships 2009 in Liberec , Magál showed a slightly increasing form with two top 20 placings over the 30 km pursuit and the 50 km mass start. However, he could not keep this consistently and only reached rank 26 at the season finale. In the following season 2009/10 he started just as weakly as in the previous year, but got the qualification for the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver despite missing top results . There he won the bronze medal with the relay together with Lukáš Bauer , Martin Jakš and Martin Koukal . In the individual disciplines, he finished 29th in the 50 km mass start and 38th in the double pursuit, only places in the midfield.

A year later at the Nordic World Ski Championships 2011 Magál was again without an individual medal. Even with the relay, he ran far past the podium in eighth place. After the world championship, the Czech moved to the Alpine Cup for a few races, although he did not achieve top results there either. He finished the 2011/12 season opening in Kuusamo as 37th overall. The following Tour de Ski 2011/12 Magál broke off again prematurely after he did not start the sprint in Toblach .

In January 2013 Magál was on the podium again after a long time with the Czech relay in La Clusaz as third. However, he was unable to take his good form with him to the 2013 Nordic World Ski Championships in Val di Fiemme, neither with the relay nor as an individual runner. After he reached the top 20 in the individual disciplines only once as 20th over 50 km, he even missed the top 10 with the relay and was only eleventh.

In the winter of 2013/14, Magál managed to make it into the squad again for his fifth 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, despite missing points . After rank 43 in the skiathlon, he reached rank 53 over the final 50 km. With the military race of the CISM on March 26, 2014 in Sodankylä , Finland , he contested his last international race so far four weeks after the games.
