Johann Mühlegg (born November 8, 1970 in Marktoberdorf ) is a former German cross-country skier . Since 1999 he has also had the citizenship of Spain , for which he competed in competitions until he was banned from doping.

First successes and affair

After winning the Junior World Championships in 1989 and 1990, Mühlegg took part in the 1992 Winter Olympics in Albertville , 1994 in Lillehammer and 1998 in Nagano . In 1993 a dispute began with the then national coach Georg Zipfel : Mühlegg indirectly accused him of " discussing " his drinks . Mühlegg sought help from Justina Agostinho, a native Portuguese with German citizenship . Agostinho believed in “the incarnated spirit of the Eternal Father ” who spoke to Mühlegg through her. He told her that Mühlegg was cursed by Zipfel . She consecrated water for Mühlegg, which the athlete drank regularly. Mühlegg always carried a ration of this water with him when traveling. As a result, Mühlegg accused Zipfel of spiritualism , which led to the suspension of Mühlegg for the 1995 World Cup in Thunder Bay from the German Ski Association . In 1998 he was excluded from the team and subsequently started for the Spanish Ski Federation FEDI, for which he won the overall World Cup. At the World Championships in Lahti in February 2001, he won a silver medal (by moving up after a disqualification ) in the 20 km pursuit race and gold in the 50 km freestyle .

2002 Salt Lake City doping case

At the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City , Mühlegg, who started for Spain, first won two gold medals in the 30 km freestyle and 10 km pursuit disciplines, for which he accepted the congratulations of the Spanish King Juan Carlos . Shortly afterwards he also won the classic 50 km run; in a previous doping control in his blood in the A sample which has been EPO - derivative darbepoetin alpha demonstrated - Mühlegg first had the gold medal for the 50 km-running return. But since the NOKs of Canada and Norway appealed against the decision of the IOC to the International Sports Court (CAS) in Lausanne , Mühlegg was also stripped of the two gold medals previously received . The CAS , chaired by Thomas Bach, confirmed the judgment.

Mühlegg was banned by the FIS for two years until February 20, 2004. Shortly before this suspension expired, he announced his retirement from competitive sports. Mühlegg presented his view of things in an autobiography published in 2004. In 2014, he lived as a real estate agent in Natal, Brazil .
