Odd-Bjørn Hjelmeset (born December 6, 1971 in Sandane , Norway ) is a former Norwegian cross-country skier . He was considered a specialist in the classic running style.

Career

Hjelmeset, who already attracted attention at the Junior World Championships in 1991 in Reit im Winkl by winning the Norwegian 4x10 kilometer relay, won bronze over 10 km classic at the 1999 World Championships , and at the 2001 World Cup classic bronze over 15 km and gold with the relay and gold with the relay at the 2005 World Cup .

By the end of the 2006/07 season he had eight World Cup victories, plus ten further podium places. In the 1999/2000 season Hjelmeset was third in the overall World Cup ranking. At the 2007 World Championships in Sapporo he won the gold medal in the 4x10 km relay together with Eldar Rønning , Lars Berger and Petter Northug and became world champion over 50 km classic.

In 2007 Hjelmeset was honored with the Holmenkollen Medal . He is also a successful athlete: at the Norwegian championships in 1996 and 1999 he came third in the 3000 meter obstacle course .

At the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, Hjelmeset won the silver medal in the relay competition over 4 × 10 km together with Northug, Berger and Martin Johnsrud Sundby .

Hjelmset is the sports director of the Norwegian Biathlon Federation .
