Sulo Nurmela (born February 13, 1908 in Onkamaa , † August 13, 1999 in Hamina ) was a Finnish cross-country skier .

Career

Nurmela, who started for Vehkalahden Veikot , won the gold medal at the Nordic World Ski Championships in 1934 in Sollefteå with the relay and over 18 km each time the gold medal. In 1934 and 1935, he won the 17 km run at the Lahti Ski Games . At the Nordic World Ski Championships in 1935 in Vysoké Tatry , he won the gold medal with the relay. In the following year he was Olympic champion with the Finnish relay at the 1936 Winter Olympics in Garmisch-Partenkirchen . He also achieved seventh place over 18 km there. In March 1937 he won the Lahti Ski Games over 50 km. At the Nordic World Ski Championships in Lahti in 1938 , he finished eighth over 50 km. At the Lahti Ski Games in 1939 he came in second place over 18 km and in 1941 in third place over 50 km.
