Johan Arne Olsson (born March 19, 1980 in Skultuna ) is a former Swedish cross-country skier .

Career

1998 to 2007

Johan Olsson starts for the Åsarna IK ski club . He made his first steps on the international stage at the Junior World Championships in Pontresina in 1998 . Two years later he was runner-up in the 4 × 10 kilometer race in Štrbské Pleso with the Swedish relay team and also fifth in the individual competition over 10 kilometers. Until his World Cup debut in 2001 in Cogne , he ran in lower-class FIS and Continental Cup races. In his cross-country skiing World Cup debut, he finished 54th over ten kilometers. Until December 2003, Olsson was used sporadically in the World Cup, but mostly started in lower class races in which he was often able to place well. He was able to celebrate a success as the winner of the bronze medal on the 15-kilometer route in the national championships in 2003. In December, he was 16th over 15 kilometers in Davos to win World Cup points for the first time and from now on he mostly started in the World Cup. With the Swedish relay he was third the following day.

In January 2005, Olsson came in tenth in Nové Město (15 kilometers) for the first time among the top ten in a World Cup race. In 2005, Olsson started in Oberstdorf for the first time at the Nordic World Ski Championships . The debutant was entered in four races, the best results were seventh place with the relay and 19th place over 50 kilometers. A year later he also competed for the first time in the Olympic Games at the races in Pragelato . The best of his three results on individual routes was a sixth place in the 15-kilometer race. With the relay around Mathias Fredriksson , Anders Södergren and Mats Larsson , he surprisingly won the bronze medal. Then Olsson won bronze medals in the pursuit and over 50 kilometers at the Swedish championships. The Nordic World Ski Championships 2007 in Sapporo was also successful, he finished seventh over 15 kilometers.

Since 2007

At the beginning of the 2007/08 season , Olsson could again achieve a top 10 World Cup placement in Beitostølen with 10th place. On December 9, 2007 he reached the podium with the team and was third in the season. He also started successfully at two FIS races in Åsarna before recording a slight drop in performance in the World Cup in January and February 2008. Even with the relay in Falun , he fell well short of expectations with eighth place. In the individual World Cup in Oslo , he managed to place in the top ten for the first time.

In the following season 2008/09 he started late after he started at FIS races. In Gällivare he immediately achieved a top 10 placement in the individual World Cup race over 15 km. He was back on the podium with the relay for a long time and came in second in the end. The season repeated this placement in La Clusaz in December before Olsson managed to finish second in the singles in Otepää in January . At the Swedish Nordic Ski Championships 2009 in Sundsvall he was second in the individual over 15 km and second in the pursuit. In the following World Cup race in Valdidentro he reached the podium again and was third in the end.

At the Nordic World Ski Championships in 2009 in Liberec , Czech Republic , he was sixth after eighth place in the classic singles, 16th place in the pursuit with the relay. After the World Cup, Olsson's performance curve went down again. It was not until the start of the 2009/10 World Cup season that he found his way back to his old strength and reached eighth place over 15 km in Beitostølen. At the Swedish Championships in Piteå in 2010 he won bronze in singles. After finishing seventh in Canmore in February , he was finally nominated for the Olympics.

At the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver , Olsson won the gold medal in the relay competition over 4 × 10 km together with Daniel Rickardsson , Marcus Hellner and Anders Södergren . In addition, he achieved the bronze medal in the mass start race over 50 kilometers behind Petter Northug and Axel Teichmann and in the skiathlon over 30 km behind his compatriot Marcus Hellner and Tobias Angerer . In the individual over 15 km he reached 11th place.

In the first World Cup race after the Games, he reached fifth place over 50 km in Oslo. In Gällivare, at the beginning of the 2010/11 season, he was again able to run to the top of the podium with the relay. At the Swedish Championships 2011 in Sundsvall, he won two silver medals again. After a rather mediocre 23rd place at the World Cup in Drammen , he started at the Nordic World Ski Championships in Oslo in 2011 . There he won the silver medal in the relay together with Marcus Hellner , Daniel Rickardsson and Anders Södergren behind the Norwegian team. In the individual disciplines, he clearly missed the top 10 placements.

In Bruksvallarna he won bronze in the individual over 50 km at the Swedish Championships in April 2011. In his first World Cup race of the 2011/12 season in Sjusjøen , he was able to win an individual race again. He was also successful with third place in the season. It was his last podium finish until he won the Scandinavian Cup in Åsarna in January 2012. At the Swedish Championships in Östersund , which took place shortly afterwards , he started in all cross-country skiing disciplines and won the silver medal in the skiathlon over 30 km and in the 15 km individual competition.

In February 2012 he managed to win another World Cup after three months. He finished the season in 14th place overall. He was also able to place himself at the front in the Distance World Cup and was 10th overall at the end of the season.

He started the 2012/13 season successfully with a second place in the relay in Gällivare. He finished the Tour de Ski 2012/2013 in January in ninth place overall. After another podium with the relay in La Clusaz, he won his first individual title over 15 km at the 2013 Swedish Championships in Falun . Three weeks later he was able to win the World Cup in Davos over the same distance . At the Nordic World Ski Championships in 2013 in Val di Fiemme , he won silver over 15 km classic and with the relay. Shortly afterwards he won the classic gold medal in the individual over 50 km. In the following years he only took part in a few World Cups. At the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi , he won the silver medal over 15 km classic and the gold medal with the relay. He also finished ninth in the 50 km mass start race. The following year he won the bronze medal in the 50 km mass start race, the silver medal with the relay and the gold medal in the 15 km freestyle at the 2015 Nordic World Ski Championships in Falun. In the 2016/17 season he finished second with the relay at the World Cup in Ulricehamn . At the Nordic World Ski Championships 2017 in Lahti he achieved the bronze medal with the relay. He also took 26th place in the 50 km mass start race and ninth place over 15 km classic. In spring 2017 he declared his World Cup career over.
