August Kiuru (born July 12, 1922 in Gromovo , † February 23, 2009 in Hartola ) was a Finnish cross-country skier .

Career

Kiuru, who initially started for Imatran Jyske and later for the Tainionkosken Urheilijoita and the Lahden Hiihtoseura , won his first national title over the 30 km individual distance at the Finnish Championships in 1946. He also secured this success in 1948. At the Lahti Ski Games he was third in 1945 and second over 18 km in 1948. In 1947 he won third place over 18 km and first place over 50 km at the Svenska Skidspelen . At the Olympic Winter Games in St. Moritz in 1948 , which were also considered the Nordic World Ski Championships , Kiuru won the silver medal in the relay race together with Lauri Silvennoinen , Teuvo Laukkanen and Sauli Rytky , after placing himself well in the individual race in seventh place. Two years later, Kiuru won his third national singles title. A little later he started at the Nordic World Ski Championships in Lake Placid in 1950 . In the individual race over 18 km he narrowly missed a medal and finished fourth. With the relay he was finally able to secure bronze. After the Winter Olympics in 1952 in Oslo did not compete, he could at the Nordic World Ski Championships 1954 in Sweden's Falun the world title in the relay and bronze in the individual race behind behind his two compatriots Veikko Hakulinen and Arvo Viitanen . His last major international tournament was the 1956 Winter Olympics in Cortina d'Ampezzo . There he won silver with the relay eight years after St. Moritz. In the individual race he had to pull out early and crossed the finish line in 21st.

After the end of his active career, Kiuru worked from 1958 to 2005 as a service technician for the Finnish cross-country skiing team. He was also active as a ski developer and product manager for ski production in Järvinen , Karhu and Peltonen.

In 2012 an interview was published by Kiuru in which he admits to having actively doped with the help of Pervitin together with team members of the Finnish team .
