Sven Christer Majbäck (born January 30, 1964 in Jukkasjärvi ) is a former Swedish cross-country skier .

Career

Majbäck made his debut in the cross-country skiing world cup on December 9, 1984 . At the 15 km race in Cogne he won his first World Cup points as 14th. In Syktywkar he stood on February 23, 1985 as third for the first time on the podium. After further good results, he finished his first season in 1984/85 in 15th place in the overall World Cup standings.

After finishing seventh in the 1985/86 season , Majbäck also started the 1986/87 season strongly with third place over 30 km in Davos . Even over the 15 km in the classic style of Calgary he achieved this podium rank. At the following Nordic World Ski Championships in 1987 in Oberstdorf , he won the bronze medal over 30 km behind his compatriot Thomas Wassberg and the Finn Aki Karvonen . He was not nominated for the 4x10km relay race. He finished the World Cup season a little later in eleventh place in the overall standings.

After Majbäck narrowly missed the podium as fourth in Castelrotto in December 1987, he made it into the top three again three weeks later in Kavgolovo . At the following Olympic Games in 1988 in Calgary he started over the 15 km and finished eleventh. A mixed year later at the Nordic World Ski Championships in Lahti in 1989 , he defended his bronze medal over 30 km in classic style. Shortly afterwards he won the relay gold medal with Gunde Svan , Lars Håland and Torgny Mogren . Before that he had finished 13th over 15 km.

With the 1989/90 season , Majbäck finally had his best World Cup season in the course of his career. After finishing sixth in Salt Lake City in Calgary, he achieved the first and only World Cup victory of his career. After various top 10 places, he again achieved third place in March in Trondheim . In the overall standings, he finished fifth. At the Swedish Championships in 1990 Majbäck won his only two national titles over 30 km and over 50 km.

At the Nordic World Ski Championships in 1991 in Val di Fiemme , Majbäck won the silver medal over 10 km and with the 4x10 km relay. Over 30 km, he finished tenth. In the 50 km individual run he was in 14th place at the end.

His start at the 1992 Olympic Games in Albertville was even more successful in the following year , where he won the bronze medal over 10 kilometers in classic style and finished fourth in the 4 × 10 km relay. In the pursuit and over 30 km, Majbäck finished sixth in the end. In the World Cup, he was unable to build on the 1989/90 season, but was able to achieve a top 10 rank as ninth in the overall standings.

At the Nordic World Ski Championships in Falun in 1993 he went without a medal for the first time. He also remained unsuccessful at Majbäck's third Olympic Games in 1994 in Lillehammer . As a result, he only rarely competed in World Cup races. Often he only started in FIS races or in the Continental Cup . He was also active in long-distance races, such as the Wasalauf , in which he finished second in 1997.

In 1999 he ended his active cross-country skiing career. A little later he acquired the Skigo wax company in Kiruna , which produces special wax mixtures for skis. He is also active as a seller of sportswear.
