The 43rd Nordic World Ski Championships took place from February 15 to 25, 2001 in Lahti . The city in Finland was the venue for the sixth time (after 1926, 1938, 1958, 1978 and 1989). 18 competitions were held (eleven cross-country skiing , four ski jumping and three Nordic combinations ). The women’s 30 km run had to be canceled because it was too cold (−23 ° C).
The cross-country skiing competitions were overshadowed by a doping scandal involving six Finnish cross-country skiers. The local runners Virpi Kuitunen , Milla Jauho , Harri Kirvesniemi , Jari Isometsä , Janne Immonen and the multiple world and Olympic champion Mika Myllylä have been shown to have taken the blood plasma expander HES . The relay of men (1st place) and women (2nd place) were disqualified. The scandal had far-reaching consequences for cross-country skiing in Finland. An investigation ordered by the Finnish government after the World Cup showed that the unauthorized performance-enhancing measures were used on the instructions of the coach and with the knowledge of the team doctor and the Finnish federation. The then head coach Kari-Pekka Kyrö received a suspended sentence and a fine for admitting to having passed on banned substances. Mika Myllylä suffered from alcohol problems after his career and was found dead in his home in 2011.
In cross-country skiing, the sprint was on the program for the first time for women and men. After a qualification, the best - here still in groups of four - competed directly against each other in several rounds. The first two qualified for the next round until the medals were distributed in the final. In addition, the so far shortest disciplines, each of which has been run in the traditional way, have been extended. For women, the previous 5 km have now been carried out over twice the distance. The men ran 15 instead of 10 km. The longest women’s distance of 30 km could not take place on that day due to the low temperatures (−23 ° C), but it was and always remained part of the program of the World Cup. The track lengths in the pursuit competition have also been changed. Instead of 10 km classic + 15 km freestyle, the men now ran 10 km each in both styles. Instead of 5 km in the classic + 10 km freestyle, the women now completed 5 km in both styles.
There was a further expansion of the discipline among ski jumpers. The team competition was now held on both the normal and the large hill.
The most successful nation was again Norway . With six gold medals, they led the medal table in front of the Germans , who increasingly showed themselves to be a winter sports nation and won three world titles here. At this World Cup it was v. a. again the ski jumpers and now also the Nordic Combined, who were successful. And the cross-country skiers also got stronger. The next nations were Sweden and Finland with two gold medals each. As an individual athlete, at this World Cup there were not those athletes who dominated everything, as was the case a few times at previous World Championships. In cross-country skiing, the Swede Per Elofsson won two individual titles and also silver with his relay. The Norwegian cross-country skier Bente Skari had the same record . In the Nordic Combined, the Norwegian Bjarte Engen Vik once again showed his class. He won one of the two individual titles and also team gold. In ski jumping there were two duels between the two outstanding athletes Martin Schmitt from Germany and Adam Małysz from Poland . On the normal hill Malysz was ahead and on the large hill Schmitt, who with his team also won the title on the large hill and the bronze medal on the normal hill and thus became the most successful athlete at this World Cup.

René Sommerfeldt started two minutes before the eventual winner Johann Mühlegg. Mühlegg went at a hell of a pace from the start and caught up with Sommerfeldt. The German then managed to attach himself to the Spaniard's ski ends until the finish. Mühlegg kept his high pace and the leading position until the end, while Sommerfeldt made up place after place and in the end won the silver medal.
